IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TOO.
A regular client of mine came in for her color touch-up. I've always made a habit of running my fingers through the hair while we go over any changes she might want anything different, but what they do not realize is, I am studying their scalp, feeling the ends, and overall checking the health of the hair.
This Morning, I noticed a red spot near one of my client's right ear. Now please remember, WE CANNOT DIAGNOSE (as that is not our job and is dangerous territory), we can only go through all the questions we are legally allowed to ask.

Its not enough to just point out the big things (mosquito bites and that sort of thing), but tell them to keep an eye out. And don't forget, that if you notice anything, cover that area with conditioner or Vaseline to protect it. Or, in the extreme case, refuse to perform the service and ask them to get it checked out first...Jon (The hair salon at ajs)

What is a color Master? Jonathan Ball

A true master hair colorist has an in-depth understanding of color theory, which is the foundation of their craft. They know how to expertly blend various shades and tones to create the perfect hue, taking into account the client's skin tone, eye color, and personal preferences.

Wait a moment! I claim foul. The above is a half hearted attempt to find a definition for color master. Is there truly a color Master? It is similar to every other career, you come out of school having only been taught basics. You find a job and that's where the real education negy and never ever ends. That is right, It never ends. For the first few years, you make tons of mistakes, win some clients, but lose at the same time.

There is no end to this road. I have been doing hair for 30 years, and I SPECIALIZE IN COLOR. But am I a master? That’s what people call me as I do at least 150 corrective colors a year (fixing a lot of other stylist's work), and with my own clients as well. But I am not the god of color. I make mistakes, and I act very confident out on the floor, and go back to the color room and panic, cry, shimmy, and shake. Sometimes I even look and look and look at the color and go, oh wait a minute, she will never know if I change things, because I cannot add this to that, to make the final perfect look for her. Yes, I know my color basics to advanced, but there is so much more to consider. CLIENTS WILL NOT ALWAYS TELL YOU THE WHOLE STORY OF THEIR HABITS

How? You asked them what medications they were on, what kind of water they had at home, and whether they had any major or minor operations? (remember, anesthesia affects everything for 4- 6 months), What products are they using?, In the old days, henna was a huge factor. The client would use henna on their hair and if you did a color or perm, their hair would fry or fall out, especially with Perms. Remember that?.

However, It is my experience, that these days, our clients might not know they are lying because they are not the experts. It is our responsibility to find out every little detail, including what “over-the-counter” medications they are using. None the less, even if people flock to you because you are known for color, we are humans and we make mistakes. The person writing this knows!!!! I'm not putting myself down, but color has become so complicated in the last 20 years (30 years since I started), it is not enough to just know the basics or even call ourselves.. Color Masters!!. What a better name (and more in line), is to call yourself, A COLOR SPECIALISTS. Being a specialist takes time and effort, but heed my warning, the moment you stop studying and taking classes, no matter how long you have been a color specialist, is the moment you will make stupid silly mistakes. We at AJ” S WIG” S, are lucky enough to be able to order and practice color and color washes on human hair wigs. And we give each other examples of a really difficult situation, and we bounce off of each other what we would do. We then choose someone's example and perform the color. I'm telling you, we have had some colors we didn’t even see on any color chart. We then corrected the color the same way as we performed the first color and out came the exact color we wanted to begin with.

I also am here to tell you this. THE MOMENT YOU STOP ASKING FOR HELP IN FRONT OF A CLIENT is the moment some of the bigger mistakes are. In other words, a color specialist is never EVER, afraid to ask for help. This can restart the brain. Now, I scoured the internet for the exact, correct definition of what a “color specialist” is and this is where I will leave this little blog:
