While we are NOT medical doctors, it's good to know what The American Board of Dermatology says about FRAGRANCE IN BEAUTY PRODUCTS: Fragrance accounts for 35-40 percent of allergy or sensitivity to the fragrance present in what consumers apply.
Enjoy becoming a hair color expert!
As you know: The first number we see at the left of the decimal or slash on a hair color tube or carton, tells us the LEVEL of the color product inside the container. And, the following number (or numbers) to the right of the decimal or slash, tell us the tone(s) of the product inside.
Again, this tells us precisely about the product inside the tube. These numbers DO NOT MEAN that applying this product to any hair will make that hair turn into the color of the name on the color container. NO! Hair color is not nail polish or wall paint!
NOTE: Let's talk about a shade, level 4. Level 4 is Light brown. There're two times when application of a level 4 hair color will create a level four:
* When the color is applied to pure white, virgin, (gray) hair
* When the color is applied to virgin level 4 (light brown) hair.... Color seeks its level
Please share this information with a new salon pro. who might not have attended color classes explaining this at their cosmetology school. Thank you, . B

Like YOU, I could tell DIY hair color users WHY the number one question they continue asking is "WHY is my blonde hair "warm"/"Brassy". Frankly, some of the photos they share, with color created at a salon.. show very pretty results.. HOWEVER: If a celebrity has super WHITE blonde or extremely pastel/ash color.... THIS is what the client expects.. even if their starting color was a rich brunette shade........ What we WANT is NOT ALWAYS GOOOD FOR US.. or even safely achievable... Sharing those words with clients.... tough; as they do not wish to hear what is often TRUE!
Friends here: PLEASE connect with me FREE on my group pager us: conversations with top Color Professionals by Beth Minardi. Thx. b
Coloring hair professionally is a lot like being a great chef in a fine restaurant. Some salon pros. decide to work on VOLUME (like at a very good fast-food restaurant), rather than on exclusive service. BOTH ways can be successful, . but a decision must be made. What type of colorist do you want to be?
When your skills and passion for perfection are in synch, you can focus on exclusivity: Seeing fewer clients per day, scheduling adequate time for each client, charging more for each service, and delivering very premium, more labor-intensive types of. color. This type of client is usualll y not in a rush, and is not interested in "Express-Service, or in discounts or "group-ons[. They can also be very demanding and will rightfully expect lots of care.
OR
When you feel confident with covering gray, changing hair colors, and with painting and highlighting hair, and when you can do all this nicely and quickly.. (because your knowledge and manual skills allow you to work quickly, AND you also enjoy being a great hair cutter and stylist)... You can plan to accommodate many clients during the day. And because you are working on volume, you will care for more people and will charge less per service, as you see more clients in a day. Express services work very well in this type of business.
DECIDE what type of business you want to create because trying to be everything to everybody over the long run, is very, very difficult and can create the kind of salon stress none of us need.
WHATEVER you decide, please be good to yourself. Allow sufficient TIME to properly care for each client. It takes time to properly greet a client (who might arrive a few minutes late). And, before you do anything else, provide a focused, detailed pre-service chat with the client so that you ae certain that you ae both on the same page. For myself, scheduling a color retouch for 30 minutes does not usually allow sufficient time to satisfy the client. As we move on in our careers and have a history with clients, the time you allow can change. HOWEVER: For myself: All New "first time" color clients are confirmed 36 hours before their appointment, AND I allow ONE HOUR so that everything is relaxed, welcoming, very clearly communicated, applied and processed perfectly. That first visit means the world to a new client.. and keeps them coming back to you for the lovely visit AND for that gorgeous service you provide Just my opinion.. and I think these words might be good ones to share with a new professional who might be working in your space. . GROWING the impact we make in business: As our community of colorists grows,, so does my ability to request from manufacturers, the support we need.. education and promotions that will GROW OUR BUSINESS.. thereby growing theirs. And also: I post almost every single day on our Facebook GROUP PAGE for salon colorists. Are YOU a member (again, this is FREE)...
