PROTECT YOUR LEATHER
1. Your leather product is made from the most durable full grain or brushed cowhide. With use, the leather will condition itself from the inside out, developing a beautiful patina and unique character over time. Resist the urge to treat or clean minor stains and scratches. Most small scratches and stains will become less noticeable over time and contribute to the character of an authentic leather bag.
2. To proactively treat your leather for basic water and stain resistance, a lightweight protector is the way to go! Our Natural Leather Protector is an odorless, wax-free formulation that helps to wick away small spills and water droplets with ease! For any light staining that may occur or for cleaning off pollutants from everyday wear, we’d recommend pairing this with the Natural Leather Cleaner.
3. Scuffs and scratches happen – it comes with the territory of full-grain leather! Periodically conditioning your leather will restore its patina and will help to buff out any superficial scratches. Our all-time favorite is the Ultimate Leather Conditioner. Bonus: this product also helps to clean leather, with a formula that reaches deep within the fibers. Feel free to pair this treatment with our Natural Leather Cleaner to treat more difficult stains.

CONDITIONING LEATHER
Maintaining soft leather will require regular conditioning. When you’re thinking about how to care for leather, aim to condition your leather goods at least twice a year. However, if you live in a dry climate, whether the weather is hot or cold, you should condition leather more frequently.
Conditioning leather helps maintain the material’s gorgeous look. It can also help leather remain more durable and add some protection against staining or damage from water. You can find many leather care products designed to help you condition leather, such as neatsfoot oil. You can also use other oils, such as mink oil, olive oil, or coconut oil. To condition your leather goods, begin by removing any straps, laces, or other accessories from the item, when possible. Then, clean the leather following the steps outlined above and let it dry overnight.
how to care for leather
The following day, apply a spot test of the leather conditioner you plan to use. Test the conditioner in an inconspicuous location and let it sit for about an hour. After an hour, check to make sure that the conditioner didn’t discolor the item. The color should naturally look a bit darker because it is now moisturized, but if it looks way off, you may want to try one of the other leather conditioners instead.
Next, apply a small amount of the conditioner to a microfiber cloth and use a circular motion to rub the conditioner into the leather. Taking care to evenly apply the conditioner over the entire item will help ensure a consistent finished look. Leave the leather to rest overnight. The following day, use a dry cloth to remove any excess residue from the items. Then, you can reattach any accessories that you removed.

Understanding Different Types of Leather
It’s essential to recognize that not all leather is created equal. Each type requires specific maintenance to preserve its unique character and ensure it stands the test of time. At Hanks Leather Goods, our heritage of craftsmanship is built on understanding these distinctions, with a special focus on the enduring beauty of full-grain leather.
Full-Grain Leather
Full-grain leather is the pinnacle of quality, celebrated for its unmatched strength, breathability, and natural charm. This leather retains the hide’s outer layer, showcasing its natural imperfections and creating a rich patina. The hallmark of our product line, full-grain leather requires care that respects its raw elegance. Minimal but deliberate maintenance, such as using high-quality conditioners, enhances its beauty while preserving its durability.
Top-Grain Leather
A more processed version compared to full-grain, top-grain leather has the outermost layer removed. Top-grain leather offers a refined alternative for those seeking a sleeker, more uniform appearance. While thinner and more pliable than full-grain, it retains impressive durability and is a staple in high-end leather goods. With its smooth surface and luxury feel, top-grain leather benefits from regular conditioning to prevent dryness and maintain its polished look.
Genuine Leather
Despite its name, genuine leather is a lower grade of leather crafted from the layers beneath the hide’s surface. Treated and colored for aesthetic appeal, it’s a more affordable option, though less durable than higher grades. Genuine leather demands consistent care, such as frequent conditioning, to prevent premature wear and ensure it remains presentable.
Bonded Leather
Bonded leather combines leather scraps and fibers with a binding agent, forming a budget-friendly option often used in furniture or bookbinding. While it lacks the durability of full- or top-grain leather, it can still benefit from protective care to avoid cracking or peeling. Gentle cleaning and occasional conditioning can extend its lifespan.
Suede And Nubuck
Soft and velvety to the touch, suede, and nubuck bring a sense of luxury to any accessory. Suede is crafted from the underside of the hide, while the nubuck is a buffed version of full-grain leather. However, both require specialized care to maintain their delicate texture. Regular brushing prevents matting, and protective sprays ward off stains. With mindful maintenance, these materials can retain their sumptuous feel and rich color.
Each leather type reflects a distinct character, enriching our collection of premium goods. From the sturdy, patina-rich full-grain belts to the soft sophistication of suede wallets, understanding your leather’s specific needs ensures it remains as beautiful and functional as the day it became yours. At Hanks, our dedication to timeless quality inspires us to guide you in preserving the integrity of every piece you own.

Daily Maintenance Tips for Leather Bags and Shoes
Keeping your leather luxury items looking their best begins with daily maintenance and careful wear.
Wipe your items regularly: Use a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust and dirt from leather items after each use. This simple habit prevents buildup and keeps leather looking clean and fresh.
Avoid direct sunlight and heat: Store leather items away from direct sunlight, radiators or other heat sources, as prolonged exposure can dry out the leather and cause fading or cracking.
Use a protective spray: If you use your leather shoes or bag on a daily basis, apply a high-quality leather or suede protective spray to shield your items from water stains.
Reshape your bags after using them: After use, remove contents from leather bags and fill them with tissue paper or a bag insert to maintain their shape. This prevents sagging and structural damage.
Rotate usage: Avoid overusing one leather item daily whenever possible. Alternating between pieces gives the material time to breathe and recover, preventing excessive wear.

IF YOUR LEATHER ISN’T BEING USED, STORE IT.
Proper storage is important when caring for leather. Store leather in a space away from heat, humidity, sunlight, and dust - preferably in a fabric (not plastic!) bag and/or box. Air leather bags, jackets, and luggage once every few weeks to prevent mold growth.
When you care for leather properly, it will become more beautiful, rugged, and interesting over time, echoing its adventures—and yours.

Deep Cleaning Techniques for Leather Bags and Shoes
When your shoes or bags need a little extra love, it’s important to have the correct tools on hand. Here’s how to deep clean the three major types of leather.
Full-grain leather: If you notice a stain on smooth leather, a leather cleaner like Lexol Leather Cleaner may be able to remove it. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth (not directly on the leather) and gently wipe the surface in circular motions. Follow up with a conditioner to restore moisture and suppleness to the piece.
Pebbled leather: Clean pebbled leather with a mild leather cleaner and a soft-bristle brush to get into the textured surface. Work in small sections and wipe away excess cleaner with a damp microfiber cloth. Finish by applying a leather conditioner to maintain its durability and flexibility.
Patent leather: Patent leather is a bit tougher than soft leather, with its reflective surface providing a barrier that stops stains from setting as easily. Wipe the surface of your patent leather with a damp cloth to remove dirt and smudges daily. For deeper cleaning, use a patent leather cleaner or polish designed to restore its glossy finish. Buff with a soft cloth to achieve a mirror-like shine.
Suede: For stains or scuffs, a suede eraser or a small amount of white vinegar applied with a clean cloth can be effective. Always work gently to avoid damaging the material. For more serious stains, consider taking your item to a professional suede cleaner.

Patent Leather
Patent leather is known for its shine and lavish appeal. The high-gloss, polished finish gives luxury items a little touch of glam, making them most suitable for eveningwear.
This type of leather is naturally resistant to water, making it ideal for stylish yet practical accessories. However, its glossy surface is prone to scuffs and fingerprints, requiring regular maintenance to preserve its appearance.
Wiping it clean with a damp cloth is usually sufficient for everyday care. You can use a specialized patent leather polish to restore shine and remove surface scuffs, keeping the leather looking flawless and vibrant.
