Q: Why so few smiles in early photos?
A: CUSTERโS CROW SCOUT Goes Ahead (a/k/a Boy in the Water) had a grin when Frank J. Haynes made the portrait in 1883, seven years after the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Eastern Montana. The pompadour comb-back was common among Crow warriors. The expandable armbands were made of German silver or perhaps brass. Some question Haynesโ identification of the man.
Smiles among Anglos and Europeans were rarely seen in early paintings or photographs. Painted portraits had been costly, formal, and serious. Photography developed under that stern influence.
Early portraits required costly visits to a professional photographer in a studio. Initially, exposure times were so long that it was impossible to hold a smile for the duration.
Among the White population, big smiles were associated with lewdness, drunkenness, and insanity. Mark Twain explained: โA photograph is a most important document, and there is nothing more damning to go down to posterity than a silly, foolish smile caught and fixed forever.โ
When Kodak mass-produced cheap Brownie cameras in the early 1900s, photography became more widespread, more informal. Affordable cameras began having faster shutters. With each decade, a larger percentage of people would display smiles. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

The mighty YELLOWSTONE RIVER is the longest undammed river in the USAโs 48 contiguous states. Circa 1910, Johnny Breum took the photo near Fallon in Eastern Montana. Starting high in the mountains of Yellowstone National Park, the river flows uninterrupted for 700 miles until it meets up with the Missouri River near Williston, ND. The bluffs with colorful striations always instill feelings of home for this lad.
East of Billings, the Yellowstone is joined by the Bighorn River. Downriver, it is joined by the Tongue at Miles City, and then 35 miles further east by the Powder River. The region around the Big Horn, Powder, and Tongue rivers was the traditional summer hunting grounds for the Lakota Sioux, Crow, Cheyenne, and Cree. The Northern Pacific Railroad completed its path along the Yellowstone River in 1883. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.
THE HONYOCKER, 1902, by L.A. Huffman. Honyocker, of German derivation, was the cattlemenโs derogatory term for a homesteader who fenced the land and turned the grass โwrong side up.โ Not a tree could be seen. Wind was blowing the horsesโ tails. Unusual for the era, but typical for the Miles City lensman, this was an action shot: No stopping, no facing the camera. The dog was nearer the camera, in front of the dust.
L.A. Huffman photographed George Wilsey and his four-horse team near Wing, ND. The photo was likely from Huffmanโs 1902 travels with historian O.D. Wheeler, who retraced the Lewis and Clark Trail and published a pictorial history showing the changes over 100 years.
I consider this the perfect framing of the working man at his solitary task. Commentary and digital, small-file restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin. As always, I hope PC users will click image to enlarge/clarify.
- Additional Information -
Itโs important to note that the Northern Plains tribes had no concept of individual ownership of land. Conflicts among tribes occurred over territorial control, but privatization of land ownership was a foreign concept.
The full(!) title of Wheeler's two-volume history was: "The Trail of Lewis and Clark, 1804-1904: A Story of the Great Exploration Across the Continent in 1804-6; With a Description of the Old Trail, Based Upon Actual Travel Over It, and of the Changes Found a Century Later."

SNUBBING POST, 1939. Toward the center of the breaking pen was the snubbing post. After roping and snubbing the horse, the next step was to acclimate the horse to the halter. Later, the horse was led around the pen, initially with the trainer facing the horse. Next, the horse was saddled and allowed to become accustomed to the weight before a rider mounted. Photojournalist Arthur Rothstein documented horse training at Quarter Circle U Ranch in Birney, 90 miles SSW of Miles City in Eastern Montana. The photo below was at the end of a day-long process.
The ranch and other outfits in the area ran dude operations during the great depression. City folks paid their hosts for lodging and meals, and performed some chores on the ranch. PC users, click photo to enlarge. Note the fence construction. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.
