Janiya had her scan review today. The weather was a little crazy with snow and sleet on the way there and sunshine on the way back but we made it safely — with a special stop to see our EP Rock friends, who we miss so much. Janiya was so happy to see them, and that truly meant a lot. 💜

Overall, it was a good appointment. Along with her routine MRIs, they also did an MRI of her brain because her migraines have been becoming more frequent over the last few months. We are so thankful that all of the MRIs — including the brain MRI — came back completely clear.

The CT scan still shows the same spot they’ve been monitoring, but there have been no changes. The doctors continue to feel that the spot looks more consistent with an infection rather than disease, which is reassuring.

Because her migraines have been increasing, her team wants to be extra thorough. They’re referring us to a different eye doctor for another evaluation and sending us back to neurology to make sure nothing is being overlooked and to help find better ways to manage her pain and get her some relief.

We’re very grateful for clear MRIs and for a medical team that is being proactive and cautious. Please continue to keep Janiya in your thoughts as we work toward answers and relief for her. Thank you all for the continued love and support — it truly means so much to us 💛

Update on Janiya
💛🎗️ She recently had both an MRI and a CT scan. We are so thankful that the MRI came back clear. 🙏 The CT scan did show a spot in her lungs that the doctors are keeping a close watch on.

We’re staying hopeful, taking it one step at a time, and are so grateful for the love, support, and prayers from family and friends. 💛

Childhood cancer changes lives forever. This month, I’m going gold to honor the fighters, the survivors, and the angels we’ll never forget.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll be listening to KDWB from the Star Studio at Children’s Minnesota in Minneapolis as they raise money and awareness for kids battling cancer. 💛

Please join me in tuning in, supporting, and spreading the word. Together, we can make a difference! ✨

It's been some time and way overdue. Janiya underwent two sets of scans. In November, she experienced migraines, prompting scans to rule out underlying conditions. Everything appeared normal, and her doctor referred her to a neurologist. All signs indicated migraines, which she would need to manage. In February, an eye doctor appointment revealed incorrect glasses were causing the migraines. After correcting this issue, the migraines ceased. In March, follow-up scans and OT and PT evaluations took place. Fortunately, all scans were clear, showing no evidence of disease. Janiya has also been discharged from OT and PT, and her neuropathy is healing, although she still has some progress to make.

Making memories

Over the last week or more I have the flood of memories of two years ago in my head.

To be grateful to be done with treatment but the worry of the unknown is scary. Will it come back? Is this symptom something? What else will she have to go thru? What will be the effects on her little body?

The anxiety/ worry nevers seems to go away. We get thru them. Wait for the what’s next.

For now we live in the moment.

You have battled so much in your small life.

Never stop doing cartwheels my girl!

A childhood cancer parent's answer to "How are you doing?" It's too hard to address each of these issues.

Every mom (or dad) can attest to this. It shouldn't have to be, but it is.

20 Things a Cancer Mom Knows By Heart

Once a cancer mom, always a cancer mom. These are 20 things I know by heart:

🎗It is the most unnatural thing in the world to be told your child has cancer.

🎗There’s nothing you can do or say to take it away from them. There’s no fixing it.

🎗Babies can be born with cancer.

🎗Toddlers can lie on the floor and throw a tantrum while having cancer.

🎗Little Leaguers will miss their games because of cancer.

🎗Teenagers can go straight from the hospital to high school graduation, then right back to the hospital.

🎗Children can often handle higher doses of chemo than adults.

🎗Kids can play hide-and-seek, chase each other in toy cars and build an epic Play-Doh creation, all while toting an IV pole with chemo.

🎗Treatment straight up sucks

🎗I can feel a fever without even touching my child.

🎗There’s such a thing as radioactive urine.

🎗Sleeping in a hospital bed with a sick child teaches you interesting life skills, like the ability to wake from a sound sleep, grab a bucket and catch vomit.

🎗Some kids can have the opposite reactions to medications... like for instance, something that makes an adult sleepy might amp a child up. Having a toddler stuck on “fast forward” will make you bone-weary.

🎗The first scar is always the worst. Taking that beautiful, soft baby skin and seeing it cut open is like ripping your heart out.

🎗You realize nothing is as important anymore as getting your child well.

🎗A mother’s love knows no bounds. Not even being puked on, directly in the face.

🎗You’ll never forget the smooth, sticky feeling of a bald head against your cheek.

🎗Every ache and pain, no matter how long your child’s been in remission, will remind you that cancer can come back.

🎗Statistics don’t mean a damn thing when it comes to your child.

🎗Kids never give up. And neither do their parents.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Awaken your awareness.
