TCA is a protein-coagulating acid. When applied at higher strengths (usually 35–50% for deep peels), it penetrates through:
• Epidermis (top layer)
• Papillary dermis
• Sometimes into the upper reticular dermis

This depth is why it can dramatically improve wrinkles, scars, and sun damage—but also why it must be done by an experienced professional.

2. “Frosting” = protein coagulation

Within seconds to minutes, the skin turns white or gray (“frosting”).

This happens because:
• TCA denatures keratin and dermal proteins
• Blood vessels temporarily constrict
• Cells in the treated layers die on contact

The degree of frosting tells the provider how deep the peel has gone.

At a cellular level:
• Keratinocytes are killed
• Damaged collagen and elastin fibers break down
