6 years of Brandon Murphy!
What a ride it’s been having this dude by my side. The Fat Joe to my Big Pun. The Silvio to my Tony. From the moment Brandon walked through the door, I knew he was meant to be one of the best barbers in this state. Not just because of the talent, but because of the kind of person he is. Genuine, loyal, thoughtful, hardworking and the type of friend who shows up every single time without question.
There is nobody who grabbed the Jewel City flag and carried it harder than Brandon. This man tattooed a diamond on his head in his first year here without hesitation. That tells you everything you need to know about how much he believes in this shop, this team and the people in it. He rides for Jewel City in a way that’s rare to find these days and I will never take that for granted.
I hate the days Brandon isn’t in the shop because his energy is part of the heartbeat of this place. He keeps people laughing, keeps morale up and somehow always knows when somebody needs a push, a joke or just somebody in their corner. Through the stressful days, the long weeks, the chaos and the wins, he’s always been right there in the trench beside me without question.
Thank you for your loyalty, your friendship and for always believing in what we built here. Thank you for laughing at my dumb jokes and making me feel like I actually run this place every once in a while. We needed you the second you walked through that door and there was no turning back after that. I genuinely cannot picture this shop or my life without you standing right beside me.

5 years with Daniel Owsley.
Danny is the piece that turned this shop into a real family. He is the dad, the coach, the backbone, and the heart of this place. For five years he has shown up and handled all the small things that most people never notice. Folding towels, keeping everything stocked, and making sure we have what we need before we even realize it. That kind of consistency is what keeps this place running.
Most of you have heard his dad jokes and his strong opinions on music, and they never disappoint. But you have also seen how hard he works. Early mornings, sometimes here at 6:30, taking care of his clients and never cutting corners. He brings that old school barber mentality every single day, and it shows in everything he does.
He is not just a great barber, he is a great coach too. If he is not in the shop, he is probably on a field somewhere, fully invested in his team. He loves the game, he loves his baseball family in Proctorville, and you can see how proud he is watching his son grow into a star. That passion carries over into everything he does.
The truth is, this shop would not be the same without him. It probably would not hold together the way it does.
He is a great barber, a great father, a great husband, and an even better friend.
We love you, Danny Boy. We are thankful for these five years and everything you bring to this shop. I would say I cannot wait until we are all old men together, but honestly we are already getting there.
Show Daniel some love, not just for the years, but for the man he is. You deserve all the good things coming your way. We love you!

Pictured is a 1949 Dodgers World Series Press pin & a vintage Cincinnati Reds patch (can’t remember the year, sorry)
These are just a few of the gifts I’ve received over my 20+ years as a barber, but among some of my favorites. Not because it’s simply baseball related, which I obviously love, but because they were actually a gift for my son, who also shares my love for baseball and its’ rich history. I’m always genuinely blown away by the amount of generosity and support customers show to me & my family. It truly means a lot that people actually listen & remember things that we’ve shared with each other while in the barber chair and think enough to be so generous to make my sons day. But it’s not all about gifts, not at all. The things that I am privileged to share with customers every single day is what keeps me coming back to the barbershop every single day. From highs to lows & everything in between, I’ve had the honor of sharing so many moments with customers, whether 90+ years old or a kids first haircut. I’ve gave a kid his very first haircut, watched as he found his love for a sport or hobby, got his first girlfriend, got his drivers license, became a successful high school pitcher on his baseball team, get a haircut for prom and now getting ready to graduate. I’ve had several customers receive terrible diagnosis, only to fight back and beat the case and live to their fullest. I’ve had many Marshall students work their butts off in school and graduate and become successful doctors, nurses, pilots, athletic directors, speech pathologists, teachers, etc…
I’ve received baseball memorabilia, guitars, tickets to events, video games, hats, shirts, food, etc…
This to all say that there are truly amazing people out there! Among us! If you are reading this, there’s a really good chance you are one of those people! Barbering is so much more than a burst fade with a textured fringe & blurry fades. Barbering is and always will be a pillar of every community and every customer that has walked through the doors of Jewel City Barber Shop has proven that. I love getting to share each and every single moment with all of the customers & their families. That is my favorite part of our business. And I’ve been so fortune and blessed to share it with the best crew I could have ever asked for at JCBS. I’m also very fortunate to share this camaraderie on every basketball court and baseball field I’ve been able to coach on, with a great group of coaches & staff.
Despite what the media may have you believe or those in charge, there are great people still in this world! Today’s gift was my reminder of what it all really means and the impact we can each have, daily. I truly appreciate each & every single one of you. Thank you!
(Thanks Don!)
