We are friends and neighbors of a grieving mother in your district — a woman who recently lost her husband and is now fighting for her own life while undergoing treatment for a serious heart condition. But her pain has been made worse by the cruel detention of her son — a young man who did everything right and is now sitting in an ICE detention center.

He showed up to his immigration hearing, just like he was supposed to — only to be taken into custody. This is someone who was accepted into an LPN program and was looking forward to starting school this fall. Instead of preparing for a future in healthcare and service, he is now locked up, denied medical treatment for a painful toothache, and hasn’t had access to a shower for days.

His mother, in fragile health, is paying $50 a day just for a few minutes of phone time to hear her son’s voice and know he’s still okay.

This is not justice. This is not who we claim to be as a community.

Congressman Kennedy — please, we’re asking you to intervene. This young man is a member of your district, of our neighborhood, of our shared humanity. He deserves compassion, not cages.
