Congressman André Carson has announced he has secured $13 million in federal funding for Indianapolis, targeting projects aimed at some of the city’s most vulnerable communities.

In a special Community Voices piece published by the Indianapolis Recorder, Carson wrote that the funding will go toward critical needs across the city, including lead pipe replacement, housing support, infrastructure improvements, and public safety initiatives.

“So far this year, I’ve secured $13 million in new funding to make Indianapolis a stronger and safer place,” Carson stated.

Among the key projects:
• Over $1 million to replace lead service lines in Martindale-Brightwood
• Investments in affordable housing and rental assistance as housing insecurity rises
• Funding for public safety efforts, including opioid crisis response and resources for investigations
• Continued support for IndyGo and infrastructure improvements across the city

Carson also emphasized the deeper impact on the Black community, noting that lead exposure, housing instability, and transportation gaps have disproportionately affected Black Indianapolis residents for decades.

“Good transportation infrastructure has historically bypassed the Black community… I believe that transportation is a civil right,” he wrote.

He added that while some lawmakers have chosen not to pursue these federal funds, he believes “these funds belong home with us,” especially as communities face increasing economic pressure.

This marks one of the more significant federal funding pushes for Indianapolis so far this year, with a focus on long-standing inequities and quality of life improvements.

This article is part of a special ‘Community Voices’ submission to the Indianapolis Recorder, written directly by Congressman André Carson.

What do you think, is this the kind of investment Indianapolis needs right now?

And what are some ideas of ways you think these funds should be used?

The Black community in Indianapolis is voicing growing calls to shut down NZone Bar & Grill following another chaotic night of incidents late last night into early this morning.

“I hate to say this, but it’s time they consider closing down for good. It’s something every week. It gets to a point.”

That statement from a prominent Indianapolis community leader and educator is now gaining traction as more details emerge about what unfolded overnight.

According to reports and scanner traffic, the situation escalated quickly:

• Multiple fights broke out outside the venue
• Shots were fired near the location, with 5 to 8 rounds reported from a vehicle
• There were also reports of possible gunfire connected to someone inside the business
• A victim later walked into St. Vincent with a gunshot wound
• Police expanded the crime scene across multiple nearby areas, including a police helicopter
• Large crowds gathered and became disruptive, with additional fights breaking out
• Multiple individuals were taken into custody
• IMPD requested additional officers, deployed ERG units, and used aerial support to control the scene

While the situation was eventually brought under control, many residents say this is part of a larger pattern, not just a one-time incident.

That’s why more voices across the city are beginning to speak out, raising concerns about:

• Ongoing safety risks
• Security measures at nightlife venues
• And how repeated incidents impact the broader perception of the community

At the same time, others are pushing back, arguing:

• One business should not be defined by incidents like this
• Situations like this happen across the city, not just at one venue
• Responsibility ultimately falls on individuals, not just establishments

Still, the tone of the conversation is shifting.

For many in Indianapolis, this is no longer just about one night. It’s about accountability, safety, and what the future of nightlife in the city should look like.

Let me break it down for you because knowledge is flavor!
Oxtail comes from the hardworking ox. the same one that once plowed fields. Back in the day, the tail was considered a throwaway cut, often given to enslaved people who were expected to make do with the scraps. But through skill, patience, and soul, they turned this tough, bony piece of meat into something magical.

By slow simmering it for hours, they broke down all the collagen and connective tissue, transforming it into a rich, tender dish that falls apart with flavor. What was once seen as “undesirable” became a culinary treasure. so good, even the oppressors took notice.

Fast forward to today, and oxtail is a beloved delicacy found on tables around the world… and going for $10.99 a pound. That’s legacy. That’s resilience. That’s soul food at its finest. We open at 1pm for Soulful Food Sunday 3351 Central Ave 46205 317.974.9349
