The study by Dr. Paul Marik and colleagues, published in 2017 in the journal Chest, investigated the effectiveness of a combination therapy of intravenous vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. This study was a retrospective before-after study conducted in a single intensive care unit (ICU). Intervention: The treatment group received a combination of intravenous vitamin C (1.5 grams every 6 hours for 4 days), hydrocortisone (50 mg every 6 hours for 7 days or until ICU discharge), and thiamine (200 mg every 12 hours for 4 days). Results:- ✅ Mortality Rate: The hospital mortality rate in the treatment group was significantly lower than in the control group. Specifically, mortality decreased from 40.4% in the control group to 8.5% in the treatment group. ✅ Organ Function: The treatment group showed a more significant improvement in organ function as measured by the SOFA score. The duration of vasopressor use was shorter, and fewer patients in the treatment group required renal replacement therapy. 08/02/2024
