Dry brushing is an ancient practice. It was the first “shampoo” it is how we have always cleaned hair. Long long long before the shelves across the world were stocked with industrial by product that needed a home in plastic bottles headed to a land fill. Brushes were what we used to clean our hair. Can hair get “dirty” well, not really. The surface of it can get layered with all sorts of things and so maybe we can call that dirty. But the hair underneath the layers of dust, products, environmental debris, sweat etc remains (unless you disturb the bonds, and that’s a hair lesson for another day) but BRUSHING, is what removes the build up from the hair. Now what TYPE of brush you use to dry brush matters. Plastic bristles, nylon bristles anything synthetic will NOT clean and strengthen your hair. The materials are at odds with the natural fiber of hair. (Using these types of brushes for styling? Different story. Another days lesson. )
You want Natural fibers. Boar, bamboo, Tampico, sisel even horse hair are all fibers that will help to drastically improve the look feel texture and volume. Everyone can brush. Yes even the curl folks. You brush right BEFORE you cleanse. There’s a lot of history in your hair (did you know your hair stores energy?) 😳

Many people think their Hair stylists are magical 🔮 intuitives because they often can sense what’s happening even before you spill the tea. And yes, it’s true, Hairdressers ARE magical people, but we have some tricks. Your hair and scalp tell us a lot about what’s going on. We can see your hair color history (yes we know when you are telling little white lies and say you have never colored your hair! 🤣), some can see if there is a change in medical and hormonal conditions, we may even be able to see trauma (it shows in the hair). Not unlike the rings on a tree, hair has and holds history.

What you use on it matters! It responds to what we choose to use. Are you using detergents that were never really made for hair with lots of smelly perfumes and waxes? These don’t really clean the hair. They mask what’s there waiting to ve nurtured, repaired and revealed.

Ok. Let’s talk hair loss and shedding. These are two totally different things & most people have experienced one or the other or both in their life times.
Hair is an amazing thing. Technically, it’s keratin a protein that extends outside our bodies. Some say it’s “dead” (it definitely is not) & it will speak to you if you know what to listen for.
Most hair products on the market today are surfactants (soaps) mixed with silicones, waxes, alcohols + fragrance. They lather (we think that means clean) & they’re usually not supporting the health of your hair OR your scalp (this is the root of the issue). Of course excess shedding & hair loss can be linked to many underlying health issues, so if you are seeing excessive hair in the shower, consult a physician & check your hormone levels. After our founder graduated the Aveda institute, and had the opportunity to walk the halls with it’s founder horstrechelbacher (and before the company was purchased by Estée Lauder ) she knew she wanted to contribute to his life’s work; which was to take the harsh toxic chemicals out of the hair industry once and for all.

And that’s what she did. After opening her first hair salon in the back of a local liquor store in Williamsburg Brooklyn (before it was THE Williamsburg Brooklyn) she tried to bring in other clean products to practice the art of Ayurveda in her own Salon Ironically, she couldn’t afford to bring in the Aveda retail line at the time. An $11k opening retail order was not in the cards.

So what do you do when you hit a brick wall? You climb it. She found a chemist, the first one named himself The Cosmic Chemist and he was located in SoCal. He made her a formula. “I remember being SO excited to get this very un impressive bottle of shampoo and I just so happened to be in Fire Island at the beach with access to an outdoor shower!? It was perfect! And so was the formula! I couldn’t wait to place an order. Only when I went to reach back out the the Cosmoc Chemist… P**f 💨 he had vanished!” This is all to say that when doors close you just are being led to the next one. Life really is a magical maze when we are paying attention. I had something I knew worked and that I wanted to start building the O’beehave line with, so I just found another chemist that could mimic the simple formula that left my hair feeling truly CLEAN and so nourished. That was over 16 years ago and I still work with that very same group. We now have 15 flavors in the line and they are all so unique- but what they all have in common? They love your hair. They were made with that intention and it’s never budged. Every single day I ask myself “still in it?” And the answer is a resounding yes!
