That right now, as you read this, microscopic eight-legged creatures are likely having a party inside the pores of your face? These are Demodex mites, tiny arachnids related to spiders and ticks that call human skin their permanent home. They are particularly fond of your hair follicles and oil glands, especially around your nose, eyebrows, and eyelashes where the oil production is highest. Because they are completely translucent and only about 0.3 millimeters long, they remain entirely invisible to the naked eye. While you sleep in the dark, these microscopic tenants crawl out onto the surface of your skin to find mates and explore your face. Don’t panic, though, because they are mostly harmless commensal organisms that act as a natural, built-in cleaning crew by eating dead skin cells and excess sebum. However, if your immune system dips and their population explodes, it can lead to a gritty skin condition known as demodicoses or trigger rosacea flare-ups. Ultimately, these uninvited roommates are a fascinating reminder that every single one of us is a walking, talking ecosystem.
