Most people think that if you don't have broken bones, you're "OK" after a car accident. Physics tells us otherwise. Any accident over 8mph (some studies show as little as 2mph!) WILL by the laws of physics and matter cause damage to soft tissues. Left untreated, the laws of crash dynamics dictate that distortion (arthritis, scar tissue formation), dysfunction (altered biomechanics), and eventually symptoms (pain) will occur, even if it takes months or years to show up. Unfortunately some of these changes can't be helped, but early intervention and treatment can help restore the vast majority of pre-accident form and function. Everyone involved in a car accident should be evaluated by a chiropractor to determine extent of biomechanical damage. A combination of manual therapies (chiropractic, massage therapy) and rehabilitative exercises (physical therapy) is the best course of care in the absence of severe trauma that requires a surgeon.
