I specialize in helping people who are in pain or seeking relief from tension and restricted movement.

As both a licensed massage therapist and a registered nurse, I take a medical approach focusing on assessment, treatment, and long-term improvement. https://handsonmedicalmassage.com/schedule-an-appointment/

Fall is here now and the temperature is cooling down. Heaters will be turned on before long, if they haven’t been already.

With the change in season and preparations for the holidays coming up, remember to take care of yourself and address those issues you’ve been putting off.

I’m here for questions and to schedule appointments. I do have availability Mondays through Saturdays at various times. Just call, text, email, etc. and we’ll find a day and time that works.

Another Apple Festival has come and gone. Dance-offs, 5k races, and many more events were well attended.

And now we’re on to Halloween 🎃 👻

The year is flying by and before we know it, it’ll be Thanksgiving, then Christmas, and New Years. On to the next.

Consider taking an hour to prepare and recover before all of the business of the holidays hit, during the rush of it all, and after.

Massage therapy can do more than you may realize.

A headache doesn’t always begin where you feel it.

Muscles around the neck, shoulders, and base of the skull can become tired or sensitive after prolonged computer use, driving, repetitive work, interrupted sleep, or holding the head in one position.

When muscular tension appears to be part of the pattern, I may assess:

* Neck and shoulder movement
* Tender areas at the base of the skull
* Activities that bring the headache on
* Whether symptoms begin after sustained positioning
* How often the headaches occur
* Whether other symptoms are present

Headaches have many possible causes, so massage isn’t appropriate for every situation. My role is to consider whether muscular tension may be contributing—and recognize when medical evaluation is the better next step.

Do your headaches tend to appear after a particular activity or time of day?

Enjoy the mild weather while we have it! The flooding may be gone at the moment but the muddy areas are still reminding us that it was just here. As things dry out and the temperature eases into the 70’s, get out there and be active.

When you feel like you need some relief from the tension, recovery from injuries, etc., I’ll be here.

Finding a massage therapist that knows how to treat the issue you’re dealing with can be a challenge. Add that to finding a therapist who has an opening soon is even more difficult.

Because of the nature of what I do in my office, I have various openings throughout the week. I treat acute and chronic issues. Some patients may only need one treatment. Some may need a few. And others need long term ongoing maintenance treatments to help keep them active.

Just text or call me and we’ll find a day and time that works.

Pain isn’t only about where you feel it. When you feel it can also provide useful information.

Does the area bother you:

* When you first get out of bed?
* After sitting or driving?
* During a repetitive activity?
* Several hours after physical work?
* At the end of a long shift?
* When you try to sleep?

Those patterns can help me understand what may be aggravating the area and which muscles are working throughout your day.

During a medical massage session, I ask questions about timing, movement, work, sleep, and daily habits because treatment shouldn’t be based on location alone. The more complete the picture, the more focused the session can be.

When does your discomfort usually feel most noticeable?

We use our hands constantly, but many of the muscles that move the fingers and wrist are actually located in the forearm.

These muscles work when you:

* Grip a steering wheel or tool
* Type or use a mouse
* Carry groceries or animal feed
* Lift weights
* Use scissors, clippers, or kitchen utensils
* Hold a phone for long periods
* Perform repetitive patient-care tasks

With enough repetition, the forearm muscles can become overworked and tender. This may contribute to tightness or discomfort around the wrist, hand, or elbow.

During a medical massage session, I may assess the forearm even when the patient’s main complaint is located elsewhere. I’ll consider which movements aggravate the area, whether grip strength feels different from side to side, and which tissues appear to be doing the most work.

We tend to notice our forearms only after they start causing problems.

Typing, gripping tools, carrying bags, working with patients, driving, using a phone, and even holding a coffee cup require repeated work from relatively small muscles.

Over time, those muscles may become tight, tender, and fatigued. Discomfort can sometimes be felt near the wrist, hand, or elbow even though much of the muscular tension is located farther up the forearm.

That’s why I don’t automatically treat only the exact spot that hurts. I also look at the muscles and repetitive activities that may be contributing to it.

What activity asks the most from your hands during a typical day?

The body is less like a collection of separate parts and more like a team.

When one area stops doing its job well, another area usually volunteers. Unfortunately, that volunteer may eventually become tired, tight, or painful.

Massage can help calm overworked tissues and improve mobility, but lasting improvement may also require changes in movement, strengthening, workplace habits, or recovery.

I’ll always be honest about what massage can reasonably help—and when another healthcare professional may need to be involved. Good treatment is about finding the appropriate approach, not pretending that one technique fixes everything.

Looking Beyond the Painful Spot

When a patient tells me where something hurts, that information is important—but it’s only the beginning. Muscles and joints work together, and discomfort in one area can sometimes develop because another area isn’t doing its share.

That’s why my sessions may include assessing nearby structures, comparing the two sides, and discussing old injuries or repetitive activities. The goal isn’t to chase every ache. It’s to develop a more complete picture of what your body is doing.
