25 years later, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the survivors who carried unimaginable wounds forward, and the first responders whose courage became part of that day’s enduring legacy.

President Barack Obama’s words on perseverance speak to the strength of the survivors and families who carried on through profound loss, and to the responsibility of remembering those whose lives were taken.

Today, we honor nearly 3,000 lives lost and hold space for the families, survivors, first responders, and communities forever changed by that September morning.

On this day in 1968, Arthur Ashe made history at the U.S. Open.

At 25 years old, Ashe defeated Tom Okker in a five-set final to become the first Black man to win the U.S. Open and the first Black man to win a Grand Slam singles title.

The win was one of the defining moments of his career and opened another door for Black athletes in tennis.
