Sunscreen Chemicals Accumulate in Body at High Levels
It’s summer and it’s hot out there!
Before you reach for sunscreen, consider the findings in a new study reported in the Wall Street Journal. The study concludes that many common sunscreen chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream at concentrations much greater than the Food and Drug Administration’s safety threshold. According to the FDA, “if active ingredients are found in the blood at a level of 0.5 nanograms per milliliter or higher, they should be analyzed to determine whether they increase the risk of cancer, birth defects or other adverse effects.”
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics points to six ingredients that should be avoided: Benzophenone, Homosalate, Padimate O, Para-aminobenzioc acid (PABA) and two ingredients that will soon be banned in Hawaii in sunscreen—Octinoxate and Oxybenzone.
Check the ingredients list on your sunscreen to ensure they’re nontoxic—not only for you but for our precious earth! Enjoy your sunny beach days safely!
