Happy Mother’s Day to the nurturers and keepers of wisdom. 🌿

Today, I’m honoring **Emma DuPree**, the “mother of Black folk herbalism.” Known throughout the South as a healer for both black and Whote families, she also taught doctors the healing power of regional plants.

What I love most about her was her radical belief that we are all herbalists at heart.

In her voice, I hear the molasses cadence of my grandfather and the countless conversations I have with my womenfolk about our gardens, recipes, and kitchen remedies.

Long before I heard the term "folk herbalism," I knew how to use our plants like mint, rose, okra, and aloe to make daily life easier. For us, it wasn’t a wellness practice; it was just how things were done.

As a mom, I love passing that same effortless connection to my kids. Whether it’s in my garden, on my skin, or on our plates, plant medicine connects them to the earth and our folkways.

For this Mother's Day I'm making some mint sweet tea today just like my mom and grandmother made : no skimping on the sugar!
