May we never, ever forget. 9.11.01.

Today is especially meaningful for us at Fonda Davis Salon & Spa.

Our owner, Fonda Davis, grew up with Fred Cox. They swam together as children, shared many of the same friends, and grew up in the same small-town circle. Fred was just a year older than Fonda.

Fonda’s mother, Elaine Rentz, was Fred’s swim coach, along with his sisters, and spent many years pouring into them, mentoring them through childhood and into young adulthood. Their families’ lives were connected long before September 11th ever became a date none of us would forget.

On September 11, 2001, Fred lost his life in the World Trade Center.

To so many across the country, his name is one of the thousands remembered from that day. But here at home, Fred was someone’s son, someone’s friend, someone’s teammate, and someone whose life is still deeply connected to this community.

Fred’s mother, our sweet Miss Ann, has been a family friend of the Rentz and Davis families for a lifetime. She is also a longtime client of Jennifer Johnson, one of our stylists here at Fonda Davis Salon & Spa, and their relationship goes back many years.

After losing Fred, Miss Ann founded Betta Place in his memory and published and illustrated a children’s book. Fonda’s father, Sheryl Rentz, stood beside her in those early days, helping with the publishing of the book, supporting the beginning of the foundation, and helping bring that vision to life.

Most recently, Miss Ann and Betta Place chose to honor Fred in another beautiful way. She held a drawing for our salon clients and gifted one woman an entire day of pampering, including hair, lashes, a facial, head spa, and more. The winner was Heather Smith, and we were so honored to be part of making that day special for her in Fred’s memory.

And now, right outside our salon, we have a beautiful memorial garden honoring Fred, Fonda’s father, the victims of September 11th, and the brave men and women who stepped forward during one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

The garden was beautifully designed and created by Dustin Rozier with The Grove Company, and we are so grateful for the care and heart he put into creating such a meaningful space.

There is something incredibly special about knowing Fred’s memory now has a permanent place here on Brunswick Street, in the town where he grew up, surrounded by people who still remember him, still love his family, and still tell his story.

Twenty-five years later, we still say their names. We still tell their stories. We still remember.

Fred, you are remembered.
To every life lost on September 11, 2001, you are remembered.
To every first responder and every person who showed unimaginable courage that day, you are remembered.

May we never, ever, ever forget.
