A gentle mechanical treatment doubled the brainās fluid drainageābut so far, the breakthrough has been demonstrated only in mice.
Scientists mapped previously overlooked pathways that carry cerebrospinal fluid from the brain through lymphatic vessels around the face and neck. This fluid helps remove metabolic waste and proteins such as amyloid-beta and tau, which are associated with neurodegenerative diseases.
Using a force-controlled device to stimulate superficial lymphatic vessels through intact skin, researchers doubled cerebrospinal fluid outflow and restored impaired drainage in aged miceāwithout drugs or surgery.
The results could eventually inspire wearable or clinical devices designed to support the brainās natural clearance system. However, this was not an Alzheimerās-prevention trial, and there is currently no evidence that ordinary facial or neck massage can prevent the disease in humans. Human studies are still needed to establish safety and effectiveness.
