Your Body Is Listening to Your Mind 🧠↔️🧘‍♀️

After 8 years as a Licensed Massage Therapist, there is something I've become increasingly fascinated by:
The connection between the mind and the body.

When I first became a massage therapist, I was primarily focused on muscles. Where is the tension? What feels restricted? What needs to be released?

But over the years, I've learned to listen to the body differently.
I have noticed patterns in the way fascia feels beneath my hands—its texture, resistance, tone, and the way it responds to touch—that often seem to accompany people who are living in a heightened state of stress or nervous-system dysregulation.

I'm not saying that I can "feel someone's trauma" through their fascia, or that a certain texture automatically means someone is dysregulated.

But after working on thousands of bodies, I've noticed enough of a pattern that it has made me deeply curious about what happens in the body when the mind doesn't feel safe, rested, or at peace.

This is why I want to start talking more about nervous-system regulation here; because sometimes we spend years trying to fix the physical symptoms without ever learning to recognize what our nervous system is doing underneath them.

Two books I've recently come across have helped me put words to this mind-body connection in a way that I think could be incredibly valuable:
📖 Mind Your Body — Nicole J. Sachs
This book explores the relationship between emotional stress, the brain, the nervous system, and physical symptoms. One of the ideas I found especially relevant is that the body isn't always simply "broken" when we're experiencing pain, tension, fatigue, or other persistent symptoms. Sometimes the nervous system has learned to remain on high alert.

One of Sachs' practices is called JournalSpeak—using uncensored writing to turn inward and acknowledge emotions, thoughts, anger, fear, frustration, grief, or other things we may habitually push away.

A simple place to start:
1. Find 5–10 quiet minutes.
2. Ask yourself: What am I actually feeling right now?
3. Write without trying to make it sound positive, rational, or acceptable.
4. Don't judge what comes up.
5. Notice what happens in your body as you allow yourself to acknowledge it.

The goal isn't to diagnose yourself or convince yourself that every physical symptom is "just stress." It's about becoming curious about the possibility that your emotional and physical experiences may be communicating with one another.

📖 Don't Believe Everything You Think — Joseph Nguyen
This book approaches the connection from another direction: our thoughts.

We often experience a thought as though it were a fact.
"I'm falling behind."
"Something is wrong with me."
"I can't handle this."
"They're going to be upset with me."
"I should be doing more."

But a thought is not necessarily a fact.

Nguyen explores how getting caught in repetitive thought patterns can create emotional suffering—and how learning to observe our thoughts instead of automatically believing them can create more space and peace.

⬇️Try this the next time you notice yourself spiraling⬇️
1. Notice the thought."I'm having the thought that something is going to go wrong."
2. Pause before reacting. You don't have to solve the thought immediately.
3. Ask: Is this actually happening right now, or am I experiencing a prediction, memory, assumption, or story?
4. Bring yourself back to the present. Feel your feet on the floor. Take a slow breath. Look around the room. Notice what is actually happening in this moment.
5. Let the thought exist without automatically obeying it.

Massage isn't just about loosening a tight muscle.
Our bodies exist in constant communication with our brains and nervous systems. The way we breathe, brace, rest, move, think, feel, and respond to stress can all influence the way we experience our bodies.

Sometimes the body needs movement.
Sometimes it needs rest.
Sometimes it needs touch.
Sometimes it needs a boundary.
Sometimes it needs to finally feel safe enough to let go.

And sometimes the thing we need isn't another technique for "fixing" our body.
Sometimes we need to learn how to listen to it.

That is what I hope to teach more of here.
Not just how to relax during a massage, but how to recognize the signals your body may be giving you between appointments—and how small, consistent practices can help you become more aware of the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, nervous system, and physical body.

If you've ever wondered why your body seems to hold tension even when you know you need to relax…

If you notice that your pain or tension gets worse during stressful periods…

If you have trouble slowing your mind down...

Or if you feel like you're constantly operating in "survival mode"…
This conversation is for you. 💜

Because learning to understand your mind & body is a form of self-care, too. 🧘‍♀️

‼️One important note ‼️
If you're experiencing persistent, new, worsening, or unexplained pain or other physical symptoms, please don't assume they're simply the result of stress or nervous-system dysregulation. Your first step should always be talking with your doctor or an appropriate healthcare professional to rule out underlying medical causes.

➡️➡️➡️Understanding the mind-body connection isn't about dismissing physical symptoms as "all in your head." The truth is, your pain is REAL. It's about recognizing that the physical and emotional sides of our experience can influence one another—and that both deserve to be cared for.

(Massage and nervous-system regulation can be wonderful tools to support your overall well-being, but they aren't a substitute for appropriate medical evaluation and treatment.)

While I firmly believe that self-care is not a luxury, but essential; I love making your self-care FEEL like a luxury. 💆‍♀️✨️

Every now and then someone will ask me: "You do 3 hour massages? How? Aren't you so exhausted after that?" 👀

2-hr, 2.5-hr, and 3-hr massages all definitely require increased physical effort and intention. During your massage, I am taking detailed mental notes of several things:
➡️How each muscle, muscle group, and fascia feels
➡️Range of motion
➡️How tight the muscle feels when stretched
➡️How tightness in one muscle group might be affecting another area in the body
➡️How the muscle responds to different pressures
➡️Past intake history & medical history
➡️Details you as the client tell me about daily habits and muscle movements that may be made during your workday

All of these details give me a comprehensive understanding to determine the best plan of care. Regardless of the length of time, each massage I give requires this level of thought. In a massage that is 2 hours or longer, I have more time to ponder these questions mentioned above in greater depth.

Anyway, my point is (regarding the question I get from time to time):
3 hour massages are actually my favorite to give BECAUSE I get to give you a deeply relaxing massage that addresses each need in detail. This in return can make your very needed self-care feel luxurious. ✨️
(And these days it doesn't exhaust me because after 8 years of doing massage, I have gained the strength and endurance to realistically give this service on a regular basis.) 💪

🌿 Exclusive 3-Hour Massage Opening 🌿

A rare 3-hour massage appointment has become available on: August 25th at 9am OR 12:30pm.

The 3-hour Therapeutic Massage is one of my favorite massages to give. 💆‍♀️

Why? ⤵️
Three hours gives your body the chance to truly let go. There's no need to rush from one area to the next, allowing me to work slowly and intentionally while addressing tension in detail. It's the perfect balance of focused therapeutic work and deep relaxation, leaving you feeling renewed from head to toe.

To make your session even more personalized, you can include any combination of these complimentary enhancements:
✨ Hot Stones
✨ Massage Cupping
✨ C*D Massage Cream or Oil
✨ Magnesium Spot Treatment
✨ Cooling Marble Stone Facial Massage
✨ Reflexology
✨ Aromatherapy
✨ Deep Tissue Techniques

Every session is thoughtfully customized to your body's needs, making this more than just a massage—it's time set aside to completely restore your mind and body.

If you've been wanting to treat yourself to the ultimate self-care experience, this is the perfect opportunity!

💆‍♀️Things I want you to know as your Massage Therapist ✨️

I honestly highly value your opinions when you receive a massage from me. Remember, it is YOUR massage that YOU are paying for. I truly desire to make your services more perfect for you.

What does this look like? Here are some examples:

Some more obvious examples first-
➡️ I can change the pressure of your massage at any time.
➡️ Prefer a silent appointment or like to talk? Either are 100% fine, and you will not hurt my feelings if you change your mind mid-appointment. Just let me know!
➡️ Too hot or too cold? I have multiple ways to adjust this for you!

More examples that may not have crossed your mind-
➡️ Don't like the music playing or the volume? I can change this, too!
➡️ Prefer massage cream over massage oil? I have both! I can use what you prefer.
➡️ I have 2 different weighted eye masks. I usually use the heavier one as my go-to. If you don't like that one, you can try the lighter one, or you can choose to go without if you prefer!

There are SO many ways I can adjust/change little things for your appointment. You are allowed to speak up (I encourage it!). You are allowed to change your mind. If you are unsure if I can change or adjust something, don't be afraid to ask!

Your massages are always personalized to give you exactly what you need. Every time. 💜
