MEET ANN! Ann is our OG, our voice of reason, our breathwork coach, one of our resident empaths, and our cryptid queen. (She's not actually a cryptid, she just likes them). Ann is also our director of brand and experience. She's in charge of our guest journey and making sure you have the best time possible while you're with us. She's excellent at rainbows hair, pixie cuts, and extensions. She's also started to take breathwork clients, her new menu is online!

Renaissance Story Part One: Meet Eliza⁠

We’re kicking off Renaissance Stories with Eliza, who is, frankly, exactly the kind of cool person we were talking about in our intro post.

Eliza moved to Kalamazoo from Lafayette, Indiana, and works at Portage Public Library. She reads incessantly, which means we have approximately one million things in common already. She’s currently reading the Dungeon Crawler Carl series (just like us for real).

When she’s not surrounded by books, Eliza loves thrifting, is learning to tailor, and is currently looking forward to helping her nephew with his very first Halloween costume. That’s very cute! She’s also working toward her master’s degree in library science, which tracks.

At home, she has a 14-year-old beagle named Luna and two cats, Sybil and Moody. An excellent household, if you ask us. I believe she also mentioned a husband!

Eliza says she loves Alder for the atmosphere, the Vanilla Coke, and because Kristen cuts a killer pixie. We can’t really argue.

Her personal Renaissance is happening right now. She’s moved states, started a new career, and is learning to make herself a priority along the way. We’re pretty proud of her for that.

RENAISSANCE STORIES

We get to meet a lot of really interesting people at Alder: artists, teachers, parents, weirdos, entrepreneurs, caretakers, creatives, overthinkers, and people who just really like having excellent hair.

So we thought it was time to introduce you to some of their faces, and not just the backs of their heads.

Renaissance Stories is a series about the amazing people who happen to let us do their hair. We’ll share a little about who they are, what they love about Alder, and the communities, people, and causes that matter to them.

We chose the word Renaissance on purpose (obvi). A renaissance is a period of renewal, creativity, discovery, and becoming. It’s about exploring new ideas, finding new parts of yourself, and making something meaningful out of what you’ve got.

Which feels pretty appropriate for a salon.

Great hair is fun and all, but the people sitting in our chairs are what make this place what it is.

Basically, we have really cool guests, and we want everyone to know it. Part One drops tomorrow.
