Most courtrooms are filled with tension, lawyers, and quiet whispers. But one courtroom in Michigan was suddenly filled with something very different… a group of excited kindergarteners.

Friends, in December 2019, five-year-old Michael Orlando Clark Jr. walked into a courtroom in Grand Rapids for one of the most important days of his life. After spending time in foster care, a judge was about to finalize his adoption. For many children, that moment happens quietly with just a few adults present.

Michael had another idea.

He asked if his entire kindergarten class could come with him.

His teacher from Wealthy Elementary School agreed, and soon a small parade of classmates arrived at the Kent County courthouse. Dozens of children squeezed into the courtroom seats holding paper hearts on sticks. They had made them specially for Michael.

When the judge asked why they were there, the answers were simple but powerful. Some children said Michael was their best friend. Others said they loved him.
The courtroom that usually handles serious legal matters suddenly became something closer to a celebration.

That day, Michael was officially adopted by Andrea Melvin and Dave Eaton, the foster parents who had been caring for him.

Later, when people asked Michael why he wanted his classmates there, his explanation was surprisingly straightforward.

To him, those children were more than just classmates.

They were his family too.

Sometimes the people who help us feel at home are sitting right beside us in the smallest chairs.
