Black Tie Barn
We supply premium fragrance oils, wicks, dyes, and more for candle makers and small businesses who value quality and education.
In addition, we manufacture our own line of expertly crafted candles and home fragrance products
We've all been there... 𤣠Just remember it's important to keep notes on each candle you're testing SOMEWHERE so you don't have to try and guess the wick size or fragrance load you're using! *Helpful Tip* If you print your own labels, simply stick a blank label to the bottom or front of your candle and write the information so you never forget which tester is which!
Thereās something about a really good gourmand scent to usher in the warmth of Christmas.
Not just sweet, not just cinnamon, and definitely not one of those generic āChristmas cookieā scents where you mostly smell vanilla.
This one has that warm, spicy bite of ginger and cinnamon first, then the fresh baked cookie comes through with vanilla frosting and that deeper toasted brown sugar sweetness underneath.
Itās cozy. Itās a little nostalgic. It smells like somebody has been baking all afternoon and youāve been conveniently hanging around the kitchen waiting... for quality control purposes of course. š
If you're looking for that nostalgic gourmand Holiday scent... look no further!
Gingersnap drizzle is part of our Office Christmas Party collection and is available now!
Grab it and the rest of the collection at Black Tie Barn main website.
Some people decorate for Christmas with cinnamon, vanilla, and pine. Some people prefer⦠pickles. š„š
Yep. You read that right. The Holiday Pickle is a real fragrance oil, and it smells exactly like youād expect. š
For the pickle lovers, the pickle obsessed, and the makers brave enough to put this one in their lineup.
Are you planning on trying out "The Holiday Pickle?" š¤š¤£
Or have you already? Lol

Very unusual scent... hard to explain this one!
Okay, maybe not literally the Northern Lights. But this fragrance does have that same wintery magic! .
āļø Cool breeze
š Shimmering citrus
š² Snow-kissed trees
⨠Cozy spices + glowing embers
š¤ Vanilla woods, tonka bean + warm musk
The result? Crisp, cozy, mysterious. Dare i say... a little weird.

š§Ŗ Mixing fragrance oils with bases - A helpful lesson š
Weāve seen quite a few questions about this and why some oils dont work well with bases. And whether you are using or have seen posts about bases from us or other suppliers....
Hereās the biggest thing to know:
Some fragrance oils are just stubborn. And unfortunately, no base can magically make every fragrance oil work. Itās science. š§Ŗ
Fragrance oils are complex blends of different aromatic materials, solvents, carriers, and other components. That means two fragrance oils that look almost identical in the bottle can behave completely differently when you add them to a finished-product base.
Alcohol-based products are generally more forgiving.
Our Perfume Base and Room/Linen/Body Spray Base can accommodate a wider range of fragrance oils because alcohol is a much better solvent for many fragrance materials than water.
But even then, not every fragrance oil will dissolve perfectly. Some may become cloudy, separate, settle, or simply refuse to stay incorporatedāespecially as you increase the fragrance percentage.
Then we get to water-based products, like Foaming Hand Soap Base.
And this is where chemistry gets a little more difficult because, as we all know...
Oil + water aren't exactly best friends. š
Fragrance oil doesn't naturally dissolve in water. That's why you usually see oil and water separate. Depending on the fragrance and the amount you're using, you may see cloudiness, floating oil, separation, or other compatibility issues.
That's where a solubilizer such as Polysorbate 80 can sometimes help. A solubilizer helps disperse oil into a water-based system more effectively. But even that isn't a guarantee with every fragrance or at every fragrance load.
So what's the takeaway?
Test. Test. Test.
Start with a small batch before making a large one. Try different fragrance percentages. Give the product time to sit. Watch for cloudiness or separation. And remember that the maximum amount a base can accept and the amount a particular fragrance will actually tolerate aren't necessarily the same thing.
A fragrance that works beautifully at 2% might separate at 5%. Another fragrance might perform perfectly at 5%. That's not necessarily a failure of the baseāor the fragrance. It's compatibility.
And while we can't promise that every fragrance oil on the market will work in every application, we can tell you this:
We're extremely happy with the quality and performance of the bases we've chosen for Black Tie Barn. ā¤ļø
They've been selected to give makers a high-quality, easy-to-use starting point without having to formulate an entire product from scratch.
Just remember: the base does a lot of the work... but chemistry still gets the final vote. šš§Ŗ
And as always, when you're trying a new fragrance + base combination, make a small test batch first!

So... do fragrance oils actually expire? š
The short answer: kind of.
Fragrance oils don't necessarily hit a specific date and suddenly āgo bad,ā but they can change over time.
Fragrance oils are made up of different aromatic materials, and those components don't all age at exactly the same rate. Over time, you may notice changes in the scent, color, clarity or overall performance of an oil, especially if it hasn't been stored properly.
That's why storage matters! Keep your fragrance oils tightly sealed in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, heat and big temperature swings. āļøš«
While some properly stored fragrance oils may remain perfectly usable beyond (or even well beyond) a year, we recommend using your oils within about 12 months for the best and most consistent results. But many may several years!
Have an older bottle sitting on your shelf? Give it a good look and smell before using it, and as always, test before making a full batch. š
Now be honest... who's got a mystery fragrance oil hiding in the back of their fragrance cabinet from 2021? šā
And if our looking for great fragrance oils. We'd love to help. š

Need a little Halloween collection inspiration? Check out these blend ideas š¤š
You don't always need a brand new fragrance to create something completely new. Sometimes two oils, a new name and a little creativity are all you need.
So we took three of our moodier fall fragrances and imagined what they could become with a little blending...
š» THE LAST SĆANCE
Blend: Ghost Stories + The Forgotten Room
Sweet smoke and charred woods meet dusty florals, aged wood and an eerie, forgotten atmosphere. Think old books, flickering candles, covered furniture and a room that hasn't been opened in decades.
š POISON APPLE
Blend: Black C***r + Smoked Orchard Reserve
Spiced apple, dark berries, burnt sugar, smoky woods and vanilla. Familiar fall fruit with a much darker side.
š¦ā⬠NEVERMORE
Blend: Raven's Hollow + Smoking Gun
Dark plum, fig and resin meet smoke, patchouli, oakmoss and musk for something deep, earthy and just a little ominous.
Consider these a good starting point, not a rulebook. Play with the ratios, test them in your own products and make them completely your own. š¤
We hope this helps inspire any last minute collections or scents you need to prepare for spooky season!
Blend ideas are for inspiration and have not been performance-tested as finished fragrance blends. Always test your finished products and verify applicable IFRA usage limits.
