K thought she was just going on a private garden tour at Swan House. Little did she know, T had been planning it for months to propose to her there. He chose Swan House because it's a place K loves most in Atlanta, so when he arranged what she thought was simply a private tour of the gardens, there would be no reason to suspect anything else was happening.

The Swan House staff were wonderful about the whole thing, keeping the cover story going and making every part of the "tour" feel completely normal, so the real surprise stayed a surprise until the very last second! I stayed far enough back to be out of the way, but close enough to catch K's face the moment she realized this wasn't a tour at all.

I spent that whole evening on Stone Mountain trying to stay close enough to catch Tana's face the second she understood Zach was proposing, but far enough back that she'd never notice me. (All while avoiding sunburn)

Twice, Zach and Tana walked toward the exact spot where he planned to propose. Twice, someone else got there first: a kid who wandered right behind them to admire the skyline, then a group of tourists spread across the view taking selfies. After the second miss, Zach texted me in a mild panic, and we scrambled to our backup spot instead.

Tana was already starting to suspect something while they wandered around looking for the right spot. She told me afterward that a small thought had crossed her mind, that maybe this was it, that the whole setup was a ruse so Zach could propose to her, and she'd talked herself out of it.

Then Zach finally got down on one knee, and I caught the exact second it landed. Not the version she'll remember from the inside, looking down at him, feeling her own heartbeat. The version only I could see: her whole face changing in real time, the half second where suspicion turned into certainty, then into tearful joy.

Now Tana and Zach have the one photo they could never have taken themselves: proof of the moment their lives changed and she said 'Yes!'

Before we even started, Emmaline and Caleb told me they were nervous about looking awkward in photos. (Almost every couple I meet says some version of this!)

By the time we finished their session, I barely had to direct them at all. They were already leaning into each other, already laughing, already so naturally themselves, that most of what I did was just get out of the way and keep shooting.

Emmaline and Caleb wrote something after their engagement session that I've reread more than once, not because it's flattering, but because of what it says about what they were actually looking for.

"Beyond her talent as a photographer, Shanle is an amazing person. She is kind, genuine, easy to talk to, and made us feel so comfortable throughout our engagement session. Those are exactly the qualities you want in a photographer!"

I think that's the part couples are often most nervous about before booking anyone: not whether the photos will turn out well, but whether the person behind the camera will actually feel safe to be around. Emmaline and Caleb trusted me with that before they ever trusted me with their wedding day, and I don't take that lightly.

Getting to be part of their story like this, to make them feel seen and themselves, is the whole reason I love this work.

Thunder cracked just as I pulled into Stone Haven, and the sky let go completely. I watched from the car, half laughing, half bracing for the worst.

We had every reason to call it there: the rain was coming down in sheets and didn't look like it would stop anytime soon. Instead I grabbed my gear, ducked under whatever cover I could find, and waited.

Fifteen minutes later, right as Jack and Alana were pulling into the drive, the rain just stopped. What was left behind was a sky I couldn't have asked for on my best day, with sun shining dramatically through storm clouds still rumbling faintly somewhere off in the distance. That amazing sky slowly melted into a breathtaking pink and gold sunset that left us speechless.

Alana texted me the sweetest note later that week:

"Thank you again for such an amazing session! We loved your energy and how excited you were to be there with us! Makes me so much more excited for wedding day! These are truly incredible and I'm so in love with them!"

I wasn't performing that energy. I was standing in the soggy grass in wet shoes, watching a storm turn into the best sky I'd shot under all year, with two people who trusted me enough to stay and find out what we could create, rain or shine.

If we had packed up and gone home the second it started raining, none of these would exist.

Nobody walks into their first wedding knowing how long family formals actually take, or how much daylight disappears between a five o'clock ceremony and portrait time. That's not something you're supposed to already know. It's my job to guide you through it.

Building a timeline together usually looks like sitting down with a couple and/or their planner, sometimes through a questionnaire, sometimes on a call, and walking through their whole day. What moments are most important? How far is the drive from getting ready to the ceremony? Is there a first look, and if not, when do we realistically set aside time for portraits? What time does the sun go down that time of year, and does the reception timeline leave room for golden hour or accidentally bury it under toasts and dinner?

None of these questions are difficult on their own. But stacked together, they're easy to get wrong if you've never done this before, and getting one of them wrong tends to throw off everything that comes after it.

So we build in buffer time. We talk through the tradeoffs, like moving the bulk of family formals to earlier in the day so everyone looks fresh and nobody feels rushed. By the time the actual day arrives, you're not thinking about any of this. You're just living it, because we already worked it out together weeks before.

The first time I *really* see how a couple is together, it's almost never on the phone or over zoom. It's at the engagement session.

Meeting in person before your wedding can change your entire wedding day experience.

I get to watch how you two actually are together: the way you talk to each other, the way he might put his hand on your back without thinking about it, the inside joke that makes you both laugh at the same time. Some couples are calm and quiet together. Others are playful and a little chaotic in the best way.

We also play around with a few different poses during that time, not because there's one right way to stand, but because I want to see what actually feels natural to you. Some couples love a close, cuddly pose. Others feel stiff in that same pose, but come alive doing something more playful.

By your wedding day, I already know your flow, know *you*. I know what makes you both relax, what you gravitate toward, and how to bring out who you actually are instead of guessing. You've also already met me, already been in front of my camera, and already seen how amazing you look together on camera! Most of that first-time nervousness melts completely away.

The engagement session isn't a bonus: it's how I learn to photograph you like I actually know you.

I started photographing weddings in 2010, and if I'm honest, it wasn't really about weddings at first. It was about light. The warm, glowy kind that makes an ordinary moment feel just a little magical.

But the light isn't what made me stay. It was the people. The small, specific stories every wedding has, different every time. That's the part I fell in love with.

A few years into building this business, life had other plans. I had two daughters close together, along with some health struggles that made it hard to keep showing up the way owning a business asks you to, so I stepped back from shooting my own weddings for almost a decade.

I didn't stop working, though. I spent those years as an associate and second photographer for other photographers, quietly learning what couples actually need from the person behind the camera.

Somewhere in those years, I saw what it looks like when a photographer isn't fully there for a couple. I remember exactly how that felt to witness, and I made myself a promise because of it. No matter the size of the wedding or the budget behind it, I show up completely, every time, just as every couple deserves.

When I reopened my business in 2023, I came back different. I stopped photographing just from the couple's point of view and started photographing the whole day: the guests, the in-between moments, the things even the couple doesn't see happening around them. My job became less about hitting the highlights and more about telling the full story from my own point of view, so they could finally how special their relationships look like from the outside.

The parts of a wedding people remember most are usually the ones nobody planned. A nervous breath before the ceremony. A parent watching quietly from the side of the room. Those are the moments I go looking for.

Your wedding already holds meaning. My job isn't to manufacture that, or put on a show for an audience. It's to notice what's actually there, then hand you back photos that feel like your day.

Not every photographer is the right fit for every couple, and that's not a bad thing to say out loud.

I used to think my job was just to be good at this. Good light, good timing, good eye, pretty photos. But somewhere along the way I realized skill isn't actually the only thing that makes a wedding day feel easy. Trust is.

The couples I work best with aren't the ones with the most elaborate vision or the biggest budget. They're the ones who feel like themselves around me pretty quickly. Who ask a question and actually want my honest answer, and who let me see the version of them that isn't posed for anyone.

To me, a good fit looks like trust. The kind where you can tell me you're nervous about something and we actually talk it through instead of glossing over it. Where you feel safe enough to say what you really want, even the parts you're still not sure about, and trust that I'll give you an honest answer back, not just the one you were hoping for.

If that's what our first conversation feels like, I'd bet we're a good fit! If it doesn't, that's useful information too. Either way, I'd rather find that out early than figure it out on your wedding day.

So if you're choosing a photographer right now, don't just look at the portfolio. Pay attention to how the conversation feels. That part matters more than people think.

I'm a Savannah wedding photographer (based in Atlanta, GA) who cares about the small, real moments as much as the big ones, the kind that show up under live oaks, swaying spanish moss, and old brick pathways. If you're getting married in Savannah, I'd love to connect.

Nothing Lauren and Trey did on their wedding day was performative. Not their private vows, which we stepped away from so they could stay just that — private. Not their ceremony. Not the first look that brought real tears, or the first dance, or the carefree laughter that followed.

Every. Single. Moment. Was genuine.

That doesn't happen by accident. It happens when a couple feels safe enough to actually be present — when they trust the people around them enough to stop performing for a camera and just live their day.

I sat back at the end of this one in total awe. Not just of Lauren and Trey, but of what happens when a couple lets go of "what it's supposed to look like" and just lets it feel like theirs.

This is the kind of day I hope for every single time I pick up my camera. And this one? I'll remember it for a long time.
