A May 2026 case report in Frontiers in Neuroscience describes an 80-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer's disease who showed remarkable transient recovery following administration of 5g of high-potency psilocybin mushrooms.

After a prolonged deep sleep-like state, she regained full sentences, recognised family members, dressed independently, and recovered urinary continence after five years.

A second 3g dose extended improvements further.

Researchers hypothesise that residual functional capacity may persist in late-stage neurodegeneration but remain inaccessible under normal conditions.

Psilocybin's disruption of the default mode network and promotion of global functional integration may temporarily restore cross-network connectivity.

The authors are clear this is a single case with no control group or formal neuroimaging. Causality cannot be established. But the latent capacity hypothesis warrants urgent controlled investigation.
