For so many years, people seeking relief from sciatic pain co.e to see me for MEDICAL MASSAGE.
I address the balance of the muscles of the hip joints and help to relax muscles in the back AND core to allow for a proper lumbar curve... "the dip". Or clients hear me say, " Make the belly button squeeze together toward the deepest point of the lumbar curve.." This is structural, muscular, mechanical... and very much relates to proper breathing.

👉Today’s post looks at a few rehab exercises for a bunion. My book has a more comprehensive bunion program (last slide). Click the link in my bio (@rehabscience) or visit rehabscience.com/book to learn more.

🔎Bunion treatment can be opertaive and non-operative. Operative treatment involves surgical realignment of the big toe, whereas, non-operative care focuses on rehabilitation strategies designed to reduce pain and improve toe function.

🧠Non-operative treatment usually includes modification of an individual’s shoes including choosing shoes with a wider toe box to reduce medially directed force on the toe. Additionally, mobilization and stretching techniques directed at improving mobility of the big toe (1st MTP) and ankle joint can help to reduce pain and improve function.

1️⃣Dorsal Mobilization: Stabilize the the 1st metatarsal and slide the proximal bone of the big toe in a dorsal direction. For mobilizations designed to increased mobility, you want to take the joint to its end position and oscillate there for 30-60 seconds. This can be performed 4-5 times.

2️⃣Dorsiflexion Stretch: Use a rolled towel or other accessory like this cool unit from @fasciitisfighter to position the big toe in dorsiflexion. Take the stretch to a tolerable intensity that can be maintained for several minutes. Joint tissue takes longer than muscle tissue to respond to stretch, so these longer hold times are important when looking to impart more permanent changes range of motion.

3️⃣Motor Control - With your foot flat on the floor, focus on extending and abducting your toe out to the side. By training the abductor muscle in this way, a person can learn to consciously maintain neutral toe alignment and may be able to slow worsening of their bunion.

🔥In the 1940s, “slenderizing salons” gained popularity as places where women could go to achieve the ideal body shape through the use of various mechanical devices, such as rollers and massagers. These salons, which were early version of a women’s gym, promised weight loss and body contouring without the need for strenuous exercise or diet, capitalizing on the era’s beauty standards that favored a slimmer figure. The machines often involved passive exercise, where clients would lie down or sit while the devices vibrated or kneaded their bodies believing that the machines would reduce fat and promote firmness.
