A portrait believed to show Martha Matilda Harper, dating 1914 circa.
Martha Matilda Harper, a young Canadian woman who had emigrated to the United States, created the first beauty salon in 1888 selling her own shampoos and tonics.
She also designed the first reclining chair so that her customers could have their hair washed without getting shampoo in their eyes, and had a half circle cut out of her sink (with running water) for ladies to rest their heads.
