It’s rare, but yes, it can happen.

Most of us think about how our tox looks today. As injectors, we also have to think about your relationship with neurotoxin treatments years from now.

With repeated botulinum toxin exposure, some patients can develop neutralizing antibodies that interfere with the toxin’s ability to work. This is called secondary nonresponse, and it can mean treatments that once worked beautifully begin working less effectively or, in some cases, stop producing the expected response.

Unlike Dysport® or Botox ® which are formulated with the active neurotoxin along with complexing proteins, XEOMIN® contains the active neurotoxin without complexing proteins.

Research into botulinum toxin immunogenicity suggests that greater exposure to foreign proteins, higher cumulative doses, frequent treatments and short treatment intervals may contribute to immune responses.

Because many of our patients plan to use tox for YEARS, we believe it’s important to educate you about the different formulations available, not simply which brand you’ve always used.

One of our own injectors has personally experienced secondary nonresponse after years of tox treatments and is currently taking an extended break from treatment. That experience has made this conversation especially important to our practice.
