This month we want to spotlight Don Lowry, the owner of True You Esthetics in La Grande, Oregon. Since graduating from Spectrum Advanced Aesthetics Institute less than a year ago, Don has already chased after his dream of self-employment and opened his own business. However, becoming an esthetician and business owner had its challenges.

Fifteen years of Don’s professional life were spent finding the right path to self-employment. Going from the corporate world to marketing and selling microcurrents, a low voltage handheld electrical device used in esthetics to minimize fine lines and wrinkles and improve the smoothness and appearance of the skin, to construction and finally landing on esthetics, Don realized through working with microcurrents and using them on friends and family, he enjoyed the process and seeing the impact he had on his clients.

The passion was there, but to go to school, Don had to sacrifice time away from his family to make his dream a reality. “We live in a rural town in Northeast Oregon, so access to schooling was not really a thing for living at home.” Don had to live in Portland, Oregon, for three months while he finished school. Being away from his family was tough, but the distance allowed him to focus on the accelerated program and graduate on time. To students, Don’s advice is, “Go ahead and start marketing yourself while you’re in school. Share your journey so that you’re visible and coming out of school with content...that’s one thing I did not do well. But that would’ve made a big, big difference for me my first couple of months of operations.”

Reflecting on his journey, Don stated, “It’s just been such a fun type of self-employment compared to everything else that I’ve tried...the leap is worth it. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I’m already seeing the freedom of schedule and benefits of taking the leap.” We are so proud of Don for chasing his dreams and jumping into his ambitions.
