Paws and Pens Fall 2026! 🐾✏️

We had an amazing time partnering with Acadiana Animal Aid and a wonderful group of middle school writers for this year's Paws and Pens event! Together, we raised $65 to support the shelter, and we're especially excited that several of our young writers were inspired to sign up as junior volunteers.

This is a major fundraiser for NWP-A, and we would love and appreciate your help in supporting our Writing Project site by participating in this event. (Volunteers must be 21+!)

The National Writing Project of Acadiana is excited to share that we have received an American Creed grant, supported by the National Writing Project and Citizen Film. The 2026-27 American Creed NWP-A Fellowship provides educators with the opportunity to engage students in exploring America’s foundational ideals through writing, reflection, and storytelling. Through this initiative, students will examine how these ideals connect to their own lives and communities and have the opportunity to contribute their voices to a national dialogue through KQED’s Youth Media Challenge platform.

NWP-A has selected 10 educators to serve as American Creed Fellows. We began this exciting journey with a professional development workshop held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. We are thrilled to work with this outstanding group of educators and to partner with American Creed in empowering students to share their stories, perspectives, and visions for their communities.

Meet Lindsey Arvie, our September Short Story Society Facilitator!

Lindsey was born in the small town of Duncan, Oklahoma, but claims Lafayette as her true home since she has lived here since she was one. She is a passionate educator, for the past seven years, and has recently picked up the love for literature again. When she is not grading papers or prepping for next steps in the curriculum, you can find her on the tennis court. A passion that she gets to share with her loving mom. She also loves to get creative in her spare time and enjoys painting banners on the side, a talent she never knew she had up her sleeve. She aspires, one day, to get her librarian add-on certification and hopefully foster a love for reading in the next generation. A love for travel and adventure is at the top of the to-do list, but will have to be put on pause as her greatest adventure is about to arrive in March of 2027. NWP has been a wonderful outlet for her and she is quick to jump on any opportunity that is thrown her way so that she can surround herself with like-minded, passionate, and empathetic educators. Something that she strongly believes the world needs more of!

Our Short Story Society is on September 24th from 7:00pm - 8:30pm! We can't wait to see you there!

What happens when students become active participants in feedback and revision?

Join high school ELA teachers as they share practical strategies from the GUAC pilot project, which focused on strengthening peer review, self-reflection, and revision. Come away with ideas for helping students give better feedback, make purposeful changes to their writing, and take more ownership of their growth as writers. This event will be held via Zoom on October 15, from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
