Today, the beauty world feels a little less bright.

Dolly was so much more than the blonde hair, rhinestones and unmistakable glamour we all loved. She represented faith, kindness, generosity, humor, strength—and being completely and unapologetically yourself.

This spring, I had the chance to visit Dollywood, and naturally, this hairstylist couldn’t pass up the “Hair You Come Again” exhibit and Dolly’s beauty station especially with my daughters. But seeing her Steel Magnolias costume may have meant even more.

Those of us in this profession know there was something very real about Truvy’s salon in Steel Magnolias. A beauty shop is rarely just a beauty shop. It’s where women gather. Where stories are told, secrets are kept, babies are celebrated, marriages begin, hearts get broken, families grow, tears are shed—and somehow, there is always laughter mixed in.

Dolly gave us Truvy, a character who understood that beautifully. “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” And anyone who has spent enough years behind a salon chair knows exactly what that means.

Dolly reminded generations of women that there’s nothing wrong with being a little extra—wear the lipstick, tease the hair a little higher, laugh loudly, love people well, and never be afraid to be exactly who God made you to be.

From all of us at The Mane Event AVEDA SalonSpa, we remember a Southern icon whose beauty went far beyond the outside.

Rest beautifully, Dolly. There will never be another quite like you. 🤍
