Have you ever come across a random egg sitting on the ground? If so, you may be in a seabird nesting colony. Let’s explore some of the reasons why this uncanny and intuitive process maybe happening when a seabird rolls it’s egg out of the nest:
Nest Maintenance 🧹
🥚Seabirds often build their nests in densely populated colonies. Rolling eggs out of the nest could be a method to maintain the cleanliness and health of the nest site. If an egg is infertile or damaged, removing it helps keep the nest environment safe.
Behavioral Mistakes 🤷‍♀️
🥚Sometimes, rolling an egg out of the nest could simply be an accidental behavior or a mistake made by inexperienced parents, especially among young or first-time breeders. They may not have an established nest site and just need to expell the egg.
Environmental Factors 🌧️
🥚Harsh weather conditions or disturbances can cause eggs to be accidentally displaced from the nest. Seabirds nesting on cliffs or in precarious locations are particularly susceptible to this.

Understanding why seabirds engage in this process might help us understand more about the colony and it’s overall health. Most of the time the egg/s removed from a nest are not viable and will not produce a chick. For viable eggs 52 days after the egg has been laid and brooded seabird chicks will start to hatch. Next time you see a random egg on the ground, keep an eye out for other signs and unique behaviors and enjoy the wonders of the seabird lifecycle!
