I made this video to help me write a proper caption. Twenty years later, this day still lives as a surly troll under the bridge of my darkest fears. Fears of that day when unspeakable acts of evil unfolded. Fears of THAT call. Fear of the moment we all run from that I know Ben will swiftly run to.
It’s late to post this. Partly because it’s so heavy to look and and honor properly. Mostly because I have to get real about how tragedy like this can be lurking around any happy corner. Ben and I saw Ground Zero 10 years later. And there was STILL a massive crater, full of twisted iron, debris and pain, torn through the cement. We visited station 10 and were treated like family by the men on shift that day. Even in Galway, Ireland, the firehouse we visited proudly displays a memorial to 9/11 and America’s fallen firefighters and police.
The photograph of ladder 118 crossing the Brooklyn bridge to help, crushes me every time. They are unknowingly answering their final call to protect and save, driving toward the burning towers and away from their safety, their families, their lives, just to save ours. And all the rescue dogs working 12 hours straight for weeks on end... trained to find live survivors, not giving up when all they find is victim after victim, gone forever.
We always say we will remember. But lately it feels like the commitments first responders make to us are forgotten. So I try to remember through the fear and grief, how we also witnessed incredible courage, outpourings of human kindness, fierce solidarity; and the best of humanity, in the face of our worst. That is also what is remembered, when we honor the thousands of innocent lives lost that day.♥️
