Beginning August 29, the City’s Horticulture team and contractors will begin revitalizing Stuart Avenue. Enhancements include: new irrigation system, expanded planting areas, new shade trees with root barriers, new landscaping, expanded patio and outdoor seating areas, refurbished light poles, benches, and crosswalks.

Road closures will take place on Stuart Avenue and Market Street beginning Saturday, August 29 to Monday, August 31. A phased reopening of the roadway will occur once work is completed. “The enhancements are going to complement the work we’ve already completed on Park Avenue, and the landscaping we have planned for Orange Avenue and Crystal Avenue,” City Horticulturist Kevin Polk said.

The project will be completed in two phases. Phase one will begin with the installation of a new irrigation system to support the enhanced landscape. New trees and native plants will be installed to provide additional shade canopy. Root barriers will be added to help protect surrounding infrastructure. The landscaping will also feature seasonal foliage that complements the historic character of the buildings along Stuart Avenue.

Existing light poles, benches and crosswalks will also be refurbished, and new trash receptacles will be installed as part of the first phase.

Phase two will focus on creating space for outdoor seating areas. Four areas along Stuart Avenue will be converted to flex spaces to offer seating areas or outdoor dining.
