Today’s Witchy Wednesday tidbits focus on one of our favorites, the Black Cat.
Pictured is our gorgeous cat Fae, one of the two black haired familiars that share our hearth with us.
Black cats are deeply intertwined with witchcratt, tunctioning historically as “familiars”-animal companions believed to assist witches, amplify magical energies, and offer spiritual protection. Their mysterious, nocturnal nature and association with witchcratt date back centuries, though the perception of their magic varies wildly across different cultures.
The Dark History -
Medieval Persecution: In the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church condemned witchcraft and declared black cats to be evil omens or devilish companions. They were often viewed as shape-shifting witches in disguise or spies sent to harm people.
Salem Witch Trials: This paranoia crossed the Atlantic during the Salem witch trials, resulting in tragic persecution of both suspected witches and black cats.
The Bad Luck Myth: Because of these historical associations, the superstition that a black cat crossing your path brings bad luck was born.
Ancient Times & Modern Witchcraft -
Celtic & Egyptian Roots: Long before the Middle Ages, ancient Celtic traditions viewed black cats as bringers of good luck and protectors against evil spirits. Similarly, they were honored in Ancient Egypt due to their resemblance to the cat-goddess Bastet.
Modern Magic: Today, modern witches largely reject the old myths about black cats being evil. Instead, they are celebrated as cherished pets and spiritual guardians. In modern witchcraft, black cats are thought to help ward off negative energy, enhance psychic insight, and provide grounded companionship during rituals.
So, how many of you are lucky enough to have one of these beauties in your life 🖤🐈⬛
