One of the most significant myths surrounding massage therapy is that deep tissue massage requires intense pressure. This is not accurate. Deep tissue refers to the specific layers of tissue being targeted, not the level of pressure applied. It's also crucial to understand that pain is not a reliable indicator of a massage's effectiveness. You shouldn't have to endure pain or experience bruising and soreness after a therapeutic massage. In reality, excessive pressure can cause the body to tense up, making it more difficult to achieve lasting benefits. Effective massage therapy involves a deep understanding of anatomy, a respect for the nervous system, and the ability to apply the right techniques at the right time. The amount of pressure required can vary greatly depending on the individual and the specific issue being addressed.
Furthermore, it's essential to recognize that each massage therapist has their unique strengths and approach. There is no single 'best massage therapist' - what matters most is finding the therapist who is best suited to your specific needs…achieving better movement, reducing pain, calming the nervous system, improving function, and feeling more comfortable in our own bodies. Healing can be effective without being painful.

More Than One Way
One thing I wish more therapists understood is that there is rarely only one right way to help a body.
Over the years, I’ve watched bodyworkers become surprisingly cruel toward one another over methods, pressure, products, tools, or techniques. As if healing only counts if it looks exactly like their approach. But the body is far too intelligent and far too individual for that kind of thinking.
One therapist may work slowly into the fascia with deep, sustained pressure. Another may barely seem to move at all while working with the nervous system and fluid dynamics. One may use movement and stretching. Another may use stillness and subtle touch. And all of them may help the client tremendously.
The truth is, most skilled therapists are simply learning different dialects of the same language.
I think we sometimes forget that behind every set of hands is another human being who has poured years into learning how to help people hurt a little less. We do not have to tear each other apart to honor the value in our own work.
There is room for different styles. Different philosophies. Different techniques.
The body has never spoken in only one language.
