Today, we pause to remember.
We remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
We honor the courage of the first responders, the strength of the families, and the countless acts of compassion that followed.
September 11 reminds us how quickly life can change—and how powerful we can be when we come together.
May we never forget those we lost.
May we continue to lead with compassion, serve one another, and remember that even in our most difficult moments, there is strength in unity.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

The purpose of these articles is to create thoughtful conversations about leadership beyond titles, strategies and performance. Through my own experience, I want to explore the everyday choices, behaviors and perspectives that shape how we lead, grow and influence the people around us. My hope is that each article gives leaders something to consider, apply and carry forward.
Culture Is An Investment In People Culture. We hear the word often.

Growth doesn’t always feel like growth.
Sometimes it feels like starting over. Sometimes it feels like being stretched beyond what’s comfortable. And sometimes it simply feels like trying to keep moving when you’re tired.
But becoming who you’re meant to be rarely happens without some discomfort along the way.
Rise. Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep showing up.
You don’t have to become a completely different person to thrive. Sometimes you just need the courage to become more fully who you already are.

The best leaders aren’t created when they get the title. They’re developed long before it.
That’s the heart behind the Next Gen Leadership Academy.
There are talented people in the trades every day who are ready to take the next step, but leadership requires more than being great at the work. It requires communication, confidence, accountability, self-awareness, and the ability to bring others with you.
We created Next Gen Leadership Academy to help emerging leaders build those skills before they find themselves trying to figure it all out on their own.
Because when we invest in the people who are coming up behind us, we aren’t just developing better leaders.
We’re strengthening the future of our companies, our industries, and our communities.
Today, we celebrate the people who show up and do the work.
The people who build, repair, create, lead, solve problems, and keep our communities moving forward.
Labor Day is a good reminder that meaningful work takes more than skill. It takes commitment, perseverance, teamwork, and pride in what you do.
To everyone who gets up every day and puts their hands, heart, and talent into their work—thank you.
And to the leaders who are investing in the people coming behind them: keep going. The future of our workforce depends on it.
Happy Labor Day!

Sometimes the smallest shift in how we communicate can make a significant difference in who we reach.
During a recent Taste of Coaching experience with MissionsFilled, we talked about something that applies to nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations alike: being passionate about what you do isn’t always enough if the people who need you don’t understand how to connect with you.
We talked about identifying who you’re really trying to reach, communicating consistently, following up, telling the personal stories behind the work, and making the next step clear.
One of my favorite parts of coaching is watching someone realize that growth doesn’t always require starting over.
Sometimes it begins by taking what is already working and becoming more intentional with it.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how easily we fill our calendars without stopping to ask whether everything on them truly belongs there.
Being busy isn’t the same as being effective—and protecting our energy is an important part of leading well.
I wrote more about this in this week’s article. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Protecting Your Energy Is Leadership This morning, I received one of those requests many of us get: Could you help with one more thing? A conversation with a business partner reminded me how easily we take for granted the energy required to do our daily work. And then we add more—another meeting, another obligation, another commitmen...

What changes when you stop questioning whether you belong in the room and start recognizing the strengths you already bring into it?
That’s part of the conversation we’re having at our next Rise & Thrive:
Authenticity – Your Greatest Strength: Moving Beyond Imposter Syndrome.
Join Shelley Davis Boyd and Nikki Thompson for a conversation about showing up authentically, recognizing your value, and moving beyond the internal doubts that can keep even highly capable women second-guessing themselves.

Strong employees don’t automatically become confident leaders the moment they’re given more responsibility.
They need opportunities to strengthen communication, decision-making, accountability, and the everyday skills that help a team work well together.
The Next Gen Leadership Academy was created to give emerging leaders practical tools they can take directly back to the workplace.
