My clients don't want that dramatic brow that screams "I got a face tattoo!"

My style is anti-tattoo and it's all about conservative natural illusions. Most of my clients want subtle enhancements with realistic pleasing qualities on their face. Technically pmu is a tattoo but I strive to make it not look like one! I do not want anyone to know you have permanent cosmetics unless you tell them. It shouldn't be obvious.

This post is of a very subtle and conservative brow. It is natural looking and doesn't have that oversaturated tattoo look of typical powder brows. I love doing work like this. Love it!! No sharpie brows given on my table. No way!

🌸 LET’S GET REAL ABOUT PERMANENT MAKEUP AFTER 60. 🌸

Take a look through most permanent makeup portfolios and you’ll notice something: a huge percentage of the before-and-after photos feature younger women.

But who can benefit tremendously from permanent makeup?

Women over 60. 💐🩷

As we age, our lips naturally change. We lose some of the color we once had, the vermilion border becomes less defined, collagen decreases, and our lips can begin to look smaller and less vibrant.

Then there’s lipstick.

🌸 It looks beautiful when you first apply it—but a few hours later, it may have feathered (traveled) a half inch off your lips into the fine lines around your mouth. If you know, you know.

So you’re stuck between wearing lipstick that constantly needs checking and reapplying, or going without it and feeling like your lips—and sometimes your entire face—look washed out.

Permanent lip color can offer another option. 💐

By restoring soft, natural-looking color and redefining a faded lip border, permanent lip makeup can help the lips appear fresher and more defined without having traditional lipstick migrating into the fine lines surrounding the mouth.

Marketing permanent makeup to women 50+ using photographs of 20- and 30-year-old clients is one thing. Showing an actual before-and-after result on mature skin gives women a much more realistic idea of what permanent makeup may look like on someone their own age.

💐🌸 NANO BROWS IN KINGMAN, ARIZONA — WHEN YOU’VE BEEN TOLD HAIR STROKES AREN’T AN OPTION 🌸💐

This beautiful client came to me after being told by another permanent makeup artist that because she had been microbladed in the past, she could no longer have hair strokes and would need powder brows instead.

But permanent makeup is rarely one-size-fits-all. 🌸

After meeting with her in person, carefully examining her skin under a professional examination light, reviewing her previous permanent makeup and discussing her health history, medications and skin characteristics, I felt very comfortable offering her machine hair strokes — commonly known today as Nano Brows.

And look at this beautiful, soft result. 💐🌸

Her skin was actually a lovely canvas for delicate hair strokes.

🌸 SO, WHAT EXACTLY ARE NANO BROWS? 🌸

There is a lot of marketing surrounding Nano Brows right now, which can make them sound like an entirely new advancement in permanent makeup.

They aren’t.

Hair-stroke techniques have been part of permanent makeup for decades. Over the years, you may have heard them called fine-line work, feathering, hair simulation, machine hairstrokes or micropigmentation.

Today, Nano Brows is the popular term used for extremely fine machine-created eyebrow hair strokes. 💐

Microblading also creates hair strokes, but it uses a manual hand tool rather than a tattoo machine.

The technique and equipment are different, and the way the skin is worked is different.

🌸 ARE NANO BROWS GENTLER THAN MICROBLADING? 🌸

They certainly can be.

Machine hair strokes may be a beautiful alternative for clients whose skin is not ideal for traditional microblading. However, the result still depends tremendously on the artist’s experience, technique, equipment, needle selection, depth and understanding of skin.

Creating fine, realistic machine hair strokes requires a great deal of precision and experience. 💐🌸

And this is where I think clients deserve a little more education.

Being a poor candidate for microblading does NOT automatically make someone a perfect candidate for Nano Brows.

Things to consider....

🌸 Very oily skin
🌸 Large or visible pores
🌸 Thick, highly textured “orange-peel” skin
🌸 Extremely thin or delicate skin
🌸 Mature skin
🌸 Certain medications
🌸 Blood thinners
🌸 Previous permanent makeup
🌸 Lifestyle and overall health

…can all influence how beautifully those tiny hair strokes heal. Not one of these items is a definite deal breaker for nanobrows. It depends on the severity and if there are multiple items to be considered.

For example, someone with very large pores and significant skin texture may technically be able to receive machine hair strokes, but those ultra-fine lines may not remain as crisp over time as they would on smoother, more refined skin.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, extremely thin and delicate skin requires tremendous care. 🌸

Many of my mature clients have beautifully smooth skin with very little oiliness, but our skin naturally becomes thinner as we age. An ultra-fine single needle can still create unnecessary trauma when used too aggressively or incorrectly.

Add certain medications or blood thinners into the equation, and those gorgeous little hair strokes may have a greater chance of healing soft, blurry or less defined than intended.

💐 THIS IS WHY I DON’T CHOOSE YOUR BROW TECHNIQUE FROM A TREND. I CHOOSE IT FOR YOUR SKIN. 💐

After many many years in permanent makeup, I evaluate clients individually.

Your skin texture, pore size, thickness, oil production, age, previous permanent makeup, medications, lifestyle and overall health all matter when deciding whether I recommend Nano Brows, Softap, powder brows, combination brows or another technique.

Sometimes I recommend hair strokes.

Sometimes I recommend powder.

Sometimes I recommend a combination.

And sometimes the most professional answer is that we need to address old permanent makeup correction or removal before adding anything new. 🌸💐

The goal isn’t to sell you the newest buzzword.

The goal is to create the most beautiful, conservative and appropriate result for YOUR skin. 🌸
