Several researchers have released a new paper claiming that immediate steps must be taken to prevent the Colorado River system from crashing. 🔗⬇️

The Colorado River Basin — which supplies Las Vegas with 90% of its water — is headed toward a "system crash," according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Colorado, Boulder warn that Lake Mead and Lake Powell could soon drop below the minimum levels needed to function as usable storage.
Lake Mead's critical "floor" is 975 feet above sea level. It's currently at 1,049, but a recent Bureau of Reclamation decision to cut Powell outflows — made to stabilize Powell's own dropping levels — could push Mead down 28 feet by next July.
Lake Powell has an even bigger problem: below 3,490 feet, Glen Canyon Dam has structural plumbing issues that could block downstream water delivery entirely — which is why the feds already made an emergency move to prop it up.
According to water law professor Rhett Larson, the federal government has limited tools to manage the system through a crisis, and it just used one of the biggest ones.
"They've already shot that bullet, and you can't unshoot it," he said.
Unless Rocky Mountain snowpack improves massively next winter, there may be no good emergency options left soon.
Las Vegas has spent decades aggressively conserving water — recycling, restricting, ripping out grass. The problem is everyone else on the river hasn't.
Nevada shouldn't ethically be on the hook for the wasteful water use of alfalfa farmers in California or the unmitigated suburban sprawl of Phoenix.
But legally and geographically, the state is tethered to a failing asset.
