Stringy, front pieces or greasy roots? I’m a dermatologist and here is a wash day routine for oily hair that will help keep your hair looking fresh for longer between washes.

1. Use a salicylic acid shampoo. We know that some of the best products come in the least sexy packages - Neutrogena T/SAL shampoo is no exception. It contains 3% salicylic acid which is a great active to reduce sebum (oil production), remove build up and exfoliate the scalp. Use this shampoo up to 3x per week (and you can alternate with your regular shampoo if you wash more frequently).

2. Apply conditioner to your ends only (can start about halfway down strands). Do not apply conditioner directly on your roots or scalp, because this can contribute to hair separation or greasiness soon after washing.

3. Blow dry your hair instead of air drying. Blow drying helps to absorb excess oils and helps lift root off the scalp which may prevent them from getting oily quickly.

4. Apply antiperspirant spray to your hairline before bed (especially if you sweat at night!). Make sure you use an antiperspirant (like Dove Advanced Care), rather than a deodorant, which won’t have the same effect. Scalp sweat can contribute to the appearance of greasy or separated hair, and using an antiperspirant spray can stop the sweat and keep your styles looking fresh for longer. (Pro-tip - you can also do this before a workout to keep your blowout intact!)
