Not every flaky scalp is “just dandruff.”

Scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis can look very similar, and in some cases, the scalp may show signs of both. That’s why it’s important to stop guessing and start learning what your scalp may actually need.

A certified scalp specialist can help guide you through a more intentional, holistic scalp care routine — both in salon and at home — while also helping you understand how internal health, product buildup, inflammation, stress, and consistency may all play a role in your scalp and hair health.

And when medical support is needed, seeing a dermatologist is encouraged.

Healthy scalp care starts with education, clarity, and consistency.

Lately, I’ve noticed that SO many of the new guests coming into my studio are dealing with seborrheic dermatitis — and honestly, it’s becoming more and more common.

Flakes, itching, excessive oiliness, inflammation, scabs, tenderness, and buildup are some of the most common things I’m seeing under the scalp microscope during consultations.

One major misconception?
🚫 Heavy oils are NOT the answer for seborrheic dermatitis. In many cases, constantly layering thick oils and grease onto the scalp can actually make buildup and irritation worse.

✅ Instead, focus on supporting the scalp holistically:

• Keep the scalp consistently clean
• Avoid excessive buildup and heavy products
• Hydrate the scalp properly
• Reduce inflammation internally (stress, diet, water intake all matter)
• Avoid scratching and aggressive flake removal
• Be mindful of tight tension styles
• Use lightweight, water-based scalp serums FIRST on a clean scalp

For many of my guests with seb derm-prone scalps, I created a lightweight scalp balancing elixir specifically designed to help seal in moisture after applying a water-based scalp serum or spray.

Because oils should SEAL hydration — not replace it. 🤍

A clean scalp is key. Water-based scalp serums/sprays should always be applied first, followed by lightweight oils only when needed. A great option for oily or seb derm-prone scalps is the Divi Scalp Serum.

Scalp care is more than hair growth — it’s about restoring the health of your crown from the root.

Starting your hair journey over doesn’t have to feel scary 🤍
Whether it’s a full big chop, a precision cut, or simply choosing to prioritize your scalp health again… your future self will thank you.

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and sometimes the best growth happens after releasing what’s no longer serving your crown. This is your sign to get your scalp and hair health in order the right way.

Before getting braids, prep your hair properly first. And if you still want a long-lasting protective style without neglecting your natural hair underneath, there are healthier options available that still allow access to cleanse and care for your scalp consistently.

At DivineHairCare, we focus on scalp-centered luxury hair care that helps your hair flourish while still achieving beautiful styles ✨

June appointments are now available to reserve at
