When a client comes into the massage room and tells me it’s their first massage, it makes me so excited for them! It’s like a person telling me it’s their birthday, or that they are celebrating a big life event or something. People often spend a lot of time debating whether or not they should, wondering what it will feel like, maybe something specific about it makes them nervous and they decide to do it anyway…in any case, the fact that they finally come in gets me super stoked because I know they’re going to love it!
If you want to get a massage but you’ve never had one and something is holding you back…don’t let it! Massage is amazing and you’ll walk out of the room wondering why it took you so long to get one. I have lots of advice, but my number one recommendation for a new client is to tell your therapist during the initial in-room interview before the massage starts that it is your first massage. That way they can walk you through all the details and answer any questions you might have before the massage starts. Sometimes massage therapists move too quickly and don’t ask the right questions, and assume you know what to do and what to expect.
If you have any questions, let me know and I would be happy to help!

When you think of someone who’s really stressed out, who comes to mind? My first thought is always a business executive in a Fortune 500 company. Or maybe a medical professional in the ER. A stay-at-home mom with little kids. These are all definitely true, but the one population that never comes to mind, that always absolutely blows me away every time I encounter one in my massage practice is….TEENAGERS!
Every time I massage a teenager, I’m shocked by how tight their muscles are. They may not seem stressed, but their bodies tell a different story. And it makes sense: they juggle social and academic pressure, sit in uncomfortable chairs all day, and haul heavy backpacks through huge schools.
Many also play sports or a musical instrument at an intense level, with practices every night, year-round specialization that leaves chronically tight muscle groups, and injuries like tendon tears and concussions. The physical toll shows up just as it does in adults, yet most parents never think of massage as a way to help their kids feel better.
At Massage Refuge, I do massage teenagers. Generally, an appropriate age to start is around 15 or 16 depending on the child. I am required by the city of Leawood to have the parents of anyone under 18 stay on the premises during the massage, though whether you sit in the room or in the waiting room is totally up to you. You also have to sign a consent form. I encourage all teenage clients to wear shorts for their massages until they feel more comfortable. They will be draped with a sheet and blanket like most standard massage sessions, but the extra layer of clothing adds a level of comfort to a first time client.
If you schedule a massage for your teenager, please let me know ahead of time through text or email. It helps me in being able to form a game plan when I have a little more information before the appointment.
If you have questions about whether or not massage would be appropriate, please don’t hesitate to ask me!

When seeking a referral, ask very specific questions about what you are looking for. This seems like a no-brainer as soon as I say it, but I see this question in Facebook groups ALL.THE.TIME! “Who is Kansas City’s best therapist?” Or “Who is the best therapist in Leawood?” All you get is 100 people suggesting businesses with no other context. Not helpful. What you love about massage, another person might hate. So spell out what you love and narrow your search.
If you visit me for the first time, I will do everything I can to meet your expectations. I encourage all clients to visit a few times. The more I work on you, the more I learn your body and can tailor the massage to your body specifically!
Feel free to reach out with any questions.
Throughout my career, I have heard some version of this sentiment SO MANY times, and it drives me absolutely crazy!
If you ask a massage therapist, “am I too ____ for massage?” You will get a “no, absolutely not” from every single one of them. I promise you. They will immediately follow up with “all we care about is that you are clean and polite.”
Do not let these opinions of yourself stop you from experiencing a truly wonderful experience!
Massage therapists as a whole are some of the most loving, open hearted, nonjudgmental people you will ever meet. We don’t look at you like that! We are totally invested in making you feel comfortable, relaxed, and in helping you relieve pain or discomfort.
I am no stranger to negative self-talk, so I get it! But one of the things that massage therapy has made me realize, (after seeing so many bodies), is just how similar we all are. Even with some small variations, we are more the same than we are different. What you may see and dislike about yourself is so, so, so typical of the human body, and I promise you that we do not see having to massage you and your ______ body as a burden in any way! The only judgement we make is how to accommodate your particular height, posture, body composition, etc, so that you will get the best service.
Anxiety about trying new things is also a very real thing for a lot of people, and I would encourage you to not let that stop you either. If it’s your first massage, be sure to let me, (or whoever you see), know, so I can explain everything in more detail to you! You can send questions or ask about things that make you nervous in an email if you would prefer, but most people ask questions or raise concerns before the massage starts.

Eventually I will try to reach out to individual PTA groups, but I figured I would throw this out there and see what happens. I am looking for small and simple ways to get my advertise my business. Since my own children go to school too far from my business, I’d love to help support YOUR children’s or grandchildren’s school fundraising efforts by donating or sponsoring when and if I am able to do so. I am open to ideas, but when I remember what my own children sometimes tried to raise donations for, there were gift certificates for gift baskets for silent auctions, or the school’s drama department wanted a sponsor and in return the business name was listed in the program. I know some sports teams need a sponsor and will advertise the sponsor on a banner in exchange.
My stipulations are: •request must come from a current client of mine already • school or sports team must be in the general Leawood area, (so the Blue Valley School district seems to be the most appropriate?) • I have a limited budget so please ask with the knowledge I might have to turn it down
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Basically, keep your eye out for opportunities for me, if you have an email for the PTA leader of your children’s school, that could help me, too. Thank you!!!

If you’re looking for a massage therapist, I’d love to have you in! I know how much time and money a massage costs. It also takes a lot of trust to see a therapist for the first time, not knowing what their style is like, or how they operate. I don’t take that for granted! I take every session seriously, give each massage a lot of thought and effort, and I tailor each session to meet your needs. Visit massagerefuge.com for more information or feel free to text or email me with any questions!
