Pheebe led our first motivational moment focused on Spirit and what that looks like for our program. One of our team standards is simple:

“A quiet gym is a losing gym.”

Spirit isn’t just about being loud. It’s about encouraging teammates, celebrating successes, creating energy, and choosing to positively impact the people around you every single day.

We also talked about heading into UCA Camp and how we will measure ourselves through a spirit lens. We want to be known for our energy, enthusiasm, encouragement, and the way we represent our team. Spirit is something every athlete can contribute to, regardless of skill level.

The goal isn’t just to win a spirit stick at camp—it’s to build habits that create a stronger team culture all season long.

SCHAPE Starts with Spirit.

Shout-outs for the first time today at Skyridge Cheer practice. 🧡

I love this tradition. Taking a minute to handwrite a note to a teammate, recognize their effort, and lift each other up. Everyone deserves a shout-out, and sometimes a few kind words can change someone’s entire day.

A strong team doesn’t just stunt together—they encourage each other too. 📣✨

My favorite flyer drill: The Stand & Hover.

Most of our stunt entries eventually become one-foot entries once athletes pass off their progressions. It’s faster, cleaner, and the style we prefer—so this drill is incredibly important.

The tumble track is the perfect height for teaching flyers how to stand tall, find their center, and build confidence before ever stepping into a stunt. It gives them a stable platform to work on balance without the fear of falling.

No tumble track? No problem. You can use bleachers, a sturdy chair, or my yoga block progression (which I’ll show soon and absolutely love).

The goal is simple:
✅ Stand tall on one leg
✅ Keep the hover leg connected and controlled
✅ Stay perfectly centered over the standing foot
✅ Hit motions without losing balance
✅ Build muscle memory before getting into a stunt

If a flyer can’t control a one-leg position on the ground, they won’t magically control it in the air.

Master it here first. Then take it to the stunt.

Hang Drill = Non-Negotiable.

Before we move on to the next stunt progression, every group must pass off the Hang Drill with a coach.

Why? Because flyers need to learn how to hold their own weight, and bases need to learn how to support without carrying everything. This drill builds grip strength, body control, confidence, and proper stunt technique before athletes ever leave the ground.

✅ Lock out arms
✅ Tight body position
✅ Hold your own weight
✅ Stay controlled the entire time

The dreaded talk… 😅

No earrings. No jewelry. No long nails.

I know it’s not everyone’s favorite conversation, but safety comes first in cheerleading. Before our athletes can even start practice, they have to pass our safety check:

✅ Earrings removed
✅ Jewelry off
✅ Nails trimmed short
✅ Hair secured
✅ Cheer shoes on

These small things make a huge difference when athletes are learning new skills and stunt progressions. Safety isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of everything we do.

Stunt Progressions: Shoulder Sit Pop Off the Back 🙌

Just because a stunt is “basic” doesn’t mean it’s safe without progressions.

Shoulder sits are actually one of the stunts I’ve seen cause the most injuries over my coaching career. That’s why we take our time, build confidence, and make sure every athlete understands their job before moving on.

Every rep matters. Every progression matters.
