There are a few elements that affect retention:
-Techniques used to apply extensions.
-How well your client takes care of their lashes.
-Using a good adhesive.

Unfortunately we can’t control everything on this list, but we can do our best to educate our clients. If retention is something you struggle with as a lash artist, here are a few tips:

Techniques:
*Make sure your clients lashes are SUPER clean before you start. Ask your clients to thoroughly wash their lashes before their appointment. If there is any makeup residue on their natural lashes it WILL affect retention. As a bonus, when your clients come with clean lashes you will have more time to get their lashes super full, resulting in better retention.

*Even if your clients come in with clean lashes, use a lash primer or saline solution to prep the lashes before application.

*Mix various thickness so you can get an extension on every lash. Use .10’s or .07s on those baby lashes so you can get every. single. one.

*Adhere the lashes about 1mm away from the skin. If they are too far away, clients are tempted to pick at them. Also, when combing them with the mascara wand it is more likely to catch.

*Strive for clean attachments.

Client Aftercare:
A few tips for clients-
*Clean. Your. Lashes. - Wash them AT LEAST three times per week. There are so many benefits to cleaning lashes; it prevents infection due to a build up of bacteria, improves retention by removing the buildup that weakens the bond of the adhesive, AND it makes for better attachments during your lash appointments, because there is no residue on the natural lash.

*Sleep with a silk pillowcase and try to avoid sleeping on your face.

*Use oil free products

*Don’t wear mascara

*Avoid touching your lashes
Adhesive:
*Find an adhesive that works well with your humidity level. There are a ton of great adhesives you can try, find what works best for you!

*If your humidity is high, pick up more adhesive on your lash...

Confession- I am a perfectionist and I absolutely hate trying to learn things that don't come naturally to me. This was super problematic when I was learning eyelash extensions! I can't tell you how many times I was ready to throw in the towel and give up! I am so happy that I didn't, because it has ended up being the most rewarding career.
I really feel like this is a great thing to remember when you are new to lashes. Part of learning is making mistakes and learning how to get past them. If you are struggling with lashes, keep pushing! Struggling is part of the process, but if you keep trying, eventually it will feel like it is second nature. You've got this!

***LASH TIP***
Do you ever feel like your eyes are TIRED after a full day of lashing?

When concentrating our eyes on a specific task, weather it is reading, looking at the computer, or doing eyelash extensions, we actually blink half as many times as we do when we aren't concentrating. The reason this is problematic is because blinking is how we bring fresh tears to the corneal surface, which helps your eyes stay moist and free of irritants. So the more we concentrate, the drier our eyes become.

If your eyes are feeling the effects of a busy work schedule, here are a few tips:
1. Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every twenty minutes, look twenty feet away for twenty seconds. This helps break the eyes’ constant strain of focusing from doing close work.
2. Control the air quality in your lash room.
In the winter, the heating systems in homes and offices create dry air. Use a humidifier to keep the air moist, which will help prevent eye irritation caused by dryness. Double bonus, most lash adhesives have optimum performance at a humidity that is between 45%-65%.
3. Drink plenty of water. If your body gets dehydrated, your eyes won't produce as many tears, causing redness, dryness, and puffy eyelids.
4. Use lubricating eyedrops between appointments. Just make sure you aren't using decongestant (anti-redness) eye drops for dry eye. Decongestants make your eyes look less red, but they also can worsen dry eye symptoms in the long run.
5. Give your eyes a rest at the end of the day by avoiding activities that require your them to focus at close range.
6. Invest in a good pair of magnification glasses. This will help alleviate some of the strain that comes from focusing your vision on all of those tiny little lashes!
