This year hit different!! ☺️🎗️

The Dempsey Challenge has always been important to me because the Dempsey Center provided much-needed services and resources to my family at no cost during the most difficult time in my life. The Challenge is how so much of that funding is raised.

This year, I was well enough to volunteer the entire day in multiple places and give back to the donors, volunteers and Dempsey employees who make it possible for cancer patients, survivors and families like mine to receive the incredible support the Center provides.

Most people don’t realize how much goes into this event. The employees who work so hard planning the Challenge will start planning next year’s event almost immediately after this one ends. They deserve so much recognition for what they make possible.

I was pumped with energy all day long. Sore body parts? Yeah. 😂 But I had an energy that can only come from being grateful to be ALIVE.

Last year, I was still in the thick of chemotherapy during the Challenge. I didn’t know if I was going to make it. I didn’t know if the chemo was working. I couldn’t even walk the Honor Walk. I had to sit in a chair at the front during the closing ceremonies. Actually, I sat in a chair most of the day.

I wept listening to the stories of people who had lost loved ones who had cancer just like mine. People who had recurrences years later and died.

I was SO scared.

I couldn’t control my sobbing. I had complete strangers come over and ask if they could pray over me.

Every single day for about 14 months, I thought about dying. There were no days off from thinking about it.

So this year, when just three weeks ago my doctor told me, “NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE. I’ll see you in three months,” something changed.

For the first time in 16 months, I was filled with an energy that came from gratitude, pure love and genuine happiness. I felt this overwhelming need to give back and make people feel good.

I’m here. I’m alive.

I’ve been given a second chance, and I want to use it to show the people who need it that there is a way to live differently after something like this. To love harder. Give more. Appreciate the little s**t. Make people feel good. Stop wasting time on things that don’t matter. Live a more meaningful life.

Last year, I sat in that chair wondering if I would survive.

This year, I spent the entire day on my feet giving back.
