Hello, fall. πŸ‚

Cool mornings.

Changing leaves.

Sweaters.

Apple picking.

Football.

And approximately six billion leaves preparing to land directly in your yard. πŸ˜‚

As we move into a new season, remember that your body moves through seasons, too.

Your activities change.

Your routines change.

Your stress changes.

What your body needs in September may be very different from what it needed in July.

Pay attention to it.

Fall is beautiful in Maine.

We'd like you to be able to enjoy it without your lower back having opinions about it. πŸ˜„

Client:

"It's probably nothing."

Massage therapist:

πŸ˜‚

Your body has an impressive ability to turn "probably nothing" into six months of compensating for something.

We're big fans of listening while it's still whispering.

You can love your life...

and still be overwhelmed by it.

You can love your family...

and need time away from everyone.

You can love your job...

and be exhausted.

You can be grateful...

and anxious.

You can be happy...

and need help.

Those things can exist at the same time.

Sometimes we think we're only allowed to struggle when something is terribly wrong.

But being human is more complicated than that.

If your body is telling you it needs care, you don't have to justify why.

You can simply arrive.

We'll meet you there. πŸ’™

"I don't have time to take care of myself."

We hear it.

And we understand it.

Because usually the people saying it aren't doing nothing.

They're doing everything.

Working.

Parenting.

Caregiving.

Volunteering.

Driving everyone everywhere.

Keeping the household running.

Trying to remember the 900 things that apparently need remembering.

We're not going to tell you to magically find more hours in the day.

But we will remind you:

You belong somewhere on your own list.

Even if you have to put your name there yourself. πŸ’™

Imagine how tired a muscle can become when it doesn't get to decide when it rests.

For people living with tremors, involuntary movements, rigidity, or repetitive muscle contractions, muscles can be working long after the person would very much like them to stop.

Massage can't stop the neurological condition causing those movements.

But we can care for the muscles doing all that extra work.

Helping reduce tension.

Supporting comfort.

Giving tired muscles an opportunity to soften.

Sometimes care isn't about changing the diagnosis.

It's about helping someone live more comfortably with it.

And that matters. πŸ’™

Sometimes we'll tell a client:

"You can relax your arm."

And they'll say:

"I AM." πŸ˜‚

Except... they're not.

Their body has been holding tension for so long that tension has become its normal.

That's something we see all the time.

Sometimes relaxation isn't something your body can immediately do just because you tell it to.

It may take time.

It may take patience.

It may take feeling safe enough to finally stop bracing.

And that's okay.

We're not grading you on your ability to relax. πŸ’™

Anxiety doesn't always look like someone falling apart.

Sometimes it looks like...

Being 30 minutes early because being late feels unbearable.

Checking everything twice.

Planning for every possible outcome.

Never saying no.

Being the person everyone can depend on.

Keeping yourself constantly busy.

Having a really hard time doing absolutely nothing.

And while you may look completely put together...

Your jaw is clenched.

Your shoulders are tight.

Your breathing is shallow.

Your muscles never quite stop bracing.

Massage isn't mental health treatment.

But your mental health and your physical body aren't living separate lives.

Caring for the body that's carrying all of it matters, too. πŸ’™

Fall has a way of changing the rhythm of everything.

The mornings get cooler.

Schedules settle in.

The days get a little shorter.

And life starts moving at a different pace.

As the season changes, it's a good time to check in with yourself, too.

How are you sleeping?

How is your stress?

How does your body feel?

What have you been ignoring because you've been too busy to deal with it?

You don't have to wait until something hurts badly enough to deserve attention.

Sometimes taking care of yourself simply means noticing sooner. πŸ’™
