A must read about Sunscreen
http://www.melanoma.org/understand-melanoma/preventing-melanoma/facts-about-sunscreen
The Facts About Sunscreen Sunscreen is an effective way to help prevent melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, but there are a lot of misconceptions about its safety. You should know the real facts about sunscreen.
Skin Color
Not including the sunless process, three pigments contribute to the skins natural tanned and untanned color: melanin, carotene, and hemoglobin. Carotene is a yellow to orange pigment derived from certain plant products, such as carrots. It tends to accumulate in the stratum corneum of the epidermis and in fat tissue of the hypodermis. Color derived from carotene is most obvious in the palms and soles, where the stratum corneum is thickest.
The pink tone of Caucasian skin reflects the red color of oxygenated hemoglobin in the capillaries of the dermis. Since Caucasian skin contains little melanin, the epidermis is nearly transparent in untanned individuals and allows blood's color to show through more predominantly.
Melanin, the most prominent pigment and is made from an amino acid called tyrosine. Melanin ranges in color from yellow to reddish to brown to black. Its production depends on an enzyme in melanocytes called tyrosinase. Freckles and pigmented moles are localized accumulations of melanin.
Sunless solutions are currently the most popular way of gaining a natural looking tan-like appearance without harmful ultraviolet exposure. The active ingredient in sunless tanners is the compound dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in externally applied cosmetics intended to add color to the skin. DHA reacts with amino groups in the proteins of the top layer of the skin, called the stratum corneum. The first step in the sunless process is known as the Maillard reaction, the same process that leads to the caramelization of sugars and the browning of bread.
How Long Will My Airbrush Tan Last?
Your tan can last between 7 to 14 days or more with proper care. Tanning extenders are a great way to prolong your tan longer. When your tan fades, usually the face and hands are the first to fade then the rest of your body. With our exclusive premium solution your tan will fade evenly, not blotchy but it is also up to you on how you maintain your tan.
WHAT CAN AFFECT A SPRAY TAN?
Anti-aging, smoothing, or skin renewal products can increase fading and can cause blotchiness.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids can speed exfoliation and skin turnover.
Beta Hydroxy Acids can increase fading and can lighten a tan.
Retin-A type products can increase fading and can cause blotchiness.
Toners containing high amounts of alcohol or witch hazel can fade a tan (witch hazel extract is fine).
Anti-acne products can cause faster fading, peeling, and blotchiness.
Any medication that affects the skin or skin health can also affect a tan.
Antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs can affect a tan.
Make-up remover cleaning preparations or oils can fade a tan.
Bar soaps, even moisturizing ones can be very harsh on the skin and a sunless tan.
Deodorant soaps should be avoided. Use a SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)-free body wash for a longer lasting tan.
Some brands of lotions can cause rapid or poor fading.
Do not use a rough wash implement for daily washing (loofas, scrub mitts or scrub gloves, etc.) Gently use a soft washcloth or your hand.
Adhesive tape, or products applied to skin, can pull the “tan” off (surgical tape, bandage, or peel off facial strips).
Hair removal procedures and depilatory products will lighten tanned skin. Waxing will also fade or remove a tan.
Shaving exfoliates the skin so have clients use a sharp razor with a lubricating product. Dull shaving can increase fading or cause stripes.
Body hair bleach products will also bleach the underlying skin.
Submersion in hot tubs, long hot baths, swimming pools (chlorine), fresh or salt water (a waterproof sun block helps) can lighten a tan. Reapply a lotion after swimming and always pat dry after bathing or swimming; do not rub.
Women may “tan” differently during various hormonal changes (menstruation, pregnancy or breastfeeding).
Oil skinned clients or oil skin areas (face, chest, neck, and upper back) tan lighter than surrounding skin.
Lower legs/shins often tan lighter; therefore, more product should be applied here.
Insect repellent sprays and some perfumes, when sprayed directly onto the skin, remove or fade a tan. Instead spray a cloud into air, and walk through the mist.
Excessive sweating and rubbing can cause tan to fade faster.

This post is not to alarm anyone, it is to make you aware. In 2009 I had skin cancer on my face. I had a great plastic surgeon who removed it and no one can tell I was cut about an inch on my face. I love the sun it feels great, it's relaxing and for a while it makes you look amazing. Over time it is damaging and can be life threatening. I will not tan in a tanning bed or lay out in the sun again! I will use the best sunscreen there is. I also have a mobile airbrush tanning unit and I will spray myself or teach my Daughters to spray. I also use a self tanning lotion. No more Sun. I went to the Doctor and I will be having another spot (on my back) removed in May.
Stay out of the Sun!

A Death by Suntan at Age 26 For years, Glenna Kohl pursued a tan, both in the sun and in tanning beds — which new research shows are far deadlier than once thought. By 22, she was battling the most lethal form of skin cancer.
