Having patience is difficult, especially when it comes to pimples. When a breakout develops – whether it be a blackhead, whitehead, or cystic lesion – resisting the urge to squeeze, prod, and poke at the bump can be nearly impossible.

My husband suffers from huge nodules on his back and says they can be quite painful at times.

So what are nodules??

Nodular acne is a type of inflammatory acne that causes painful lumps to form under your skin and red bumps to appear on your skin’s surface. These usually don't have a whitehead or blackhead in or around the center. These painful bumps can last from weeks to months and left untreated can lead to severe scarring and even permanent scarring.

What causes nodular acne?

Your skin's pores become blocked, trapping dead skin cells, hair and sebum(an oil your body makes to keep skin moist).
Excessive sweating, stress and anxiety, medications and even skin products might be contributing factors.
Providers sometimes call them blind pimples because they start underneath your skin. Over the counter creams and topicals aren't effective at treating, and a dermatologists diagnosis is needed.
