Sitting on my stoop after looking at the beautiful mural on the outside walls of the building that I live in. And work in. The beautiful mural that was created by my talented artist friend Michelle Newby Armstrong. The building that is The Hive.

It was completed in 2016. In November The Hive will be 18. In October I will be 50.

When I opened my shop as a hair salon, I had visions of it also being a home to support local artists. House community events. Showcase music and musicians. A real community space. Welcoming to all people. All walks of life.

The vision became real. Beyond my wildest dreams. With the support of so many clients, friends, artists, real visionaries. And wonderful co-workers.

Besides a home for creating hair magic in a comfortable environment for all, this space has been an incubator of ideas. A space for people to connect.

Benefits, art openings, birthday parties, “living room” music shows, parking lot shows, grand celebrations of all sorts, dj shows, bicycle prom check points, bicycle DRAG RACE, meeting grounds for and practice space for home grown groups such as The March Madness Marching Band and The Lexingtones Ukulele Group. A space for friends to gather in mourning of friends gone too soon. Birth announcements. Then watching them as they grow.
A home to many of my fur babies.

So much laughter and joy. So much sharing of real personal events in people’s lives. Through all the phases and chapters.

Change. It is the one constant thing.

When I opened the shop I knew that at some point I wanted to have a mural painted on the building. This was before the fantastic years of the PRHBTN murals. After they started going up all over town, I knew the time had come. I really wanted to focus on having a local artist paint the mural on my building. Michelle had some of her honeycomb inspired art on the inside walls at the time, so we began to discuss. She had never painted a full on mural at the time, but she was up for the task.

We were luckily able to secure a grant from LexArts to help fund the project. Michelle included gathering local kids to help paint an area of the mural, in turn teaching them about the importance of bees in our world. Me and some of my family helped in a bit on the front wall. Once again, a real community experience.

Over the years on any given day, I will see people taking pictures in front of the walls. For wedding announcements. Anniversaries. Instagram posts. Just because. All the time.

I’ve heard people walking by commenting on what a beautiful building, and how wonderful to have in the neighborhood.

Because art is for everyone. And I believe that.

It brings joy. It sparks conversations. It connects people. It makes people think. It makes people FEEL.

I knew when the mural was going up that a day would come when time and weather would have it’s withering effects. Repairs on the building would need to be made. Walls would need to be repainted. Such is the life of outside public art.

Well that day has come. This building that was built in 1959 on a street and in a neighborhood with such a vibrant history has walls that need repairing. So this weekend on two sides the work will begin. And two sides of the mural will be covered. Feeling all of the emotions. Especially being so close to the 18th birthday of The Hive.

I’d really love to have Michelle be able to paint again on these walls. But we are going to need help. It is no small task. I will be asking for any help in any small amount to help fund this project. We cannot do it alone. I’ll be setting up a GoFundMe soon.
Any amount would be greatly appreciated. We will also be looking around for arts grants.

Thank you all for the support through all the years for keeping this little hive going. And for supporting our local arts. For the people. For all to enjoy.

Much ♥️
