Part 2: Why Some Toes Don’t Hold Polish — And Why It Happens More in Kentucky

The Ornate Onyx • Lexington KY • Certified Master Pedicurist

If you’ve ever wondered “Why won’t polish stay on my toes?”, especially here in Lexington and Central Kentucky, this is the post you’ve been looking for.

In Part 1, I explained how some clients naturally experience retention issues.Today, I’m sharing the real, factual reason why — the part almost no one in the nail industry talks about.

Full disclosure:
I’m not a scientist or a chemist — just a very curious Certified Master Pedicurist who refuses to stop at the first “why.”I look at the why behind the why, and temperature is one of the biggest hidden factors affecting polish retention.

Did you know toenails are consistently cooler than fingernails

Thermal imaging research shows that toes naturally run cooler than fingers — even in healthy adults.

Ballpark Fahrenheit ranges:

Healthy fingernails: 86–91°F
Healthy toenails: 79–86°F

Warmest vs. coolest toe: 5–6°F difference
Warmest vs. coolest finger: up to 4°F difference

Cited :
Thermographic assessment of skin temperature in hands and feet (Journal of Thermal Biology, 2018).These are normal human temperature patterns, not medical conditions.

Temperature directly affects polish bonding

Cooler nail plates have a tendency to--->
Stay firmer
Flex less
Bond slower
Experience more shrinkage tension during curing

This leads to--->

Faster lifting
Shorter wear time
Uneven bonding
Brand‑to‑brand inconsistency

When you have done everything right it may not be a prep issue. It's quite possible it could contribute to temperature behavior — especially on toes.

🌡️ If you take anything from what I've said it should be this.
Toes are the BASELINE of circulation.

Because toes are the farthest point from the body’s warmth, they cool faster and warm slower.

Clients with circulation‑sensitive toes (including Raynaud’s‑type responses) can see even bigger temperature drops:

Fingertips
Often fall into the 70–82°F range

After cold exposure, some drop into the 60s°F
Toes often fall into the 68–78°F range

After cold exposure, some drop into the 50s–60s°F!

These numbers are not diagnostic — they simply show how dramatically temperature can shift in people whose digits cool quickly.

Did you know most nail products are formulated for “average” nail temperatures?

This is where retention issues really begin.

Most systems assume:
A warm or neutral nail plate
A consistent temperature
A flexible surface

Even products marketed for “cooler nail plates” are still designed for fingers, not the significantly cooler temperatures found in toenails — especially in Kentucky winters and fake springs.

And yes — polishes like Dazzle Dry performs best in warm, humid climates like Florida, Vegas, and Arizona because it was formulated for warmer nail plates.Kentucky’s fluctuating temperatures create a completely different environment. Which requires the client to practice proper aftercare at home.

👣 At The Ornate Onyx (Lexington KY), I adjust for YOUR nail behavior

This is where my training matters.

I work with:
Naturally cool nail plates
Colder toes
Clients who’ve never had long‑wear success

Product choices based on temperature behavior, not guesswork

Your nails aren’t difficult. They’re simply unique, and they deserve someone who understands the deeper layers behind retention.

If you are a nail tech, have you ever noticed how some toes fries faster than others? This can sometimes contribute to a drop in circulation on another toe.

If you are a client/potential client, especially with Raynaud's have you ever experienced a lack in retention?
Where polish on toes normally last 30+ days clients with an excessive drop in circulation can last sometimes 4-7days before the polish wears off sometimes less dependent on how cold they get.

This is why dry pedicures matter more than people realize ..

Some habits leave the skin a little more delicate — and knowing when to pause is one of the most important parts of restorative foot work here in Lexington Kentucky.

This client has a long‑term skin‑picking habit, which means her natural barrier was already fragile. My focus wasn’t perfection… it was protecting what she still had, avoiding irritation, and working with intention instead of force.

This is exactly why I stand behind dry, waterless pedicures here in Lexington + Central Kentucky.
No swelling. No over‑softening. No accidental over‑removal.
Just precise, controlled work that respects the skin’s current state.

She isn’t even from Kentucky — she sought me out during her travels because she wanted someone who understands real, thoughtful care and advanced dry‑technique work. She told me she’s barely ever worn polish in her life, and the way she lit up afterward reminded me why I love this industry.

I also sent her on her way with the best oil to help maintain her manicure, so she can keep her results looking their best long after she’s back home.

We did a dry manicure too (no polish)… and yes, I forgot the before 🫠 which hurts because it was one of my best transformations yet.

If you’re in Central Kentucky and want a space where your habits, sensitivities, or unique challenges are met with patience, boundaries, and advanced dry‑pedicure # knowledge, this is your spot.
Restoration with intention — every single time.

She thought her toes were the problem… until she sat in my chair.

She’d been to salons all over Lexington and Central Kentucky, and gel never stayed on her toes — not once. She told me she felt embarrassed and assumed her nails “just couldn’t hold product.”

👣 But her nails weren’t the issue.

Before I became a nail technician, I was an analyst — research, patterns, and problem‑solving are exactly how my brain works. Now, as a Certified Master Pedicurist and restorative pedicure specialist, I use that same analytical approach every single day behind the chair.

When she came in, I noticed something most salons aren’t trained to look for: her nail plates stay naturally cooler, which changes how gel behaves during curing and even after curing.

Instead of forcing a one‑size‑fits‑all product, I customized her service with a product designed for cooler nail environments.

And for the first time in years… her gel stayed the full cycle.

This is what happens when advanced education meets real analysis — not guessing, not rushing, not “just painting a nail with whatever product.”

At The Ornate Onyx in Lexington, KY, every service is tailored, researched, and chosen with intention. I work with my clients directly to find what truly works for them.

If gel has never lasted on your toes, you’re not the problem — it's possible you just haven’t been in the right chair just yet.

People see a “$100 appointment” and think nail techs pocket $100 dollars. 💅🏼💸

Here’s a realistic breakdown of where that actually goes 👇🏼

Client pays: $100

• Put away 25% for taxes
$100 → $75

• Credit card/payment processing fees
(Square, booking systems, Afterpay, etc.)
$75 → ~$72

• Nail products used during the service
(gel, acrylic, files, bits, gloves, tips, forms, sanitation products, towels, etc.)
~$8–$15
$72 → ~$64–$57

• Booth rent / salon suite / commission split
(rent, utilities, WiFi, laundry, cleaning, furniture, etc.)
~$15–$25 per client average
$64–$57 → ~$49–$32

• Business expenses split across appointments
(website, booking apps, subscriptions, phone bill, advertising, etc.)
~$5–$10
$49–$32 → ~$44–$22

• Gas + travel + wear and tear on vehicle
~$3–$7
$44–$22 → ~$41–$15

So yes… a nail tech may PROFIT somewhere around:
👉🏼 $15–$40 from that $100 appointment depending on their overhead, speed, location, and experience.

And that’s before:

• replacing lamps & e-files 💡
• continuing education 📚
• inventory restocks 📦
• social media marketing 📱
• cancellations & no-shows 🚫
• bookkeeping & insurance 🧾
• cleaning & sanitation 🧼
• unpaid messaging after hours ⏰
• years spent mastering the craft 💅🏼

Being a nail tech is a business — not just “painting nails.”

Most clients only see the finished nails. They don’t see the overhead, the education, the physical strain, the late nights, or the unpaid hours that happen behind the scenes.

So please consider your nail tech, hair stylist, lash tech, service providers all alike ❣️

I was looking through my recent pedicure photos this morning and kept thinking about how many people in Central Kentucky are walking around with troubled feet they’ve just learned to “live with.”

So here’s something I want you to know:

You don’t have to live with discomfort.
You don’t have to feel embarrassed or unheard
And you don’t have to guess what your feet need.

As a Certified Master Pedicurist, my work favors comfort first.
Every appointment here at The Ornate Onyx in Lexington, KY is built around restoring softness, reducing pressure points, improving nail wellness, and giving you a plan that actually supports your feet long‑term.

If you’ve been dealing with:
• Dry, cracked heels
• Thickened nails
• Tender spots or calluses
• Or just feet that don’t feel like “you” anymore

— I’d love to help you understand what’s going on and what can bring relief.

Your feet carry your whole world.
They deserve care that’s intentional, gentle, and informed.

If you’re in Lexington or willing to make the drive.
I would be ecstatic to have you in my chair.

A quick note for salon owners viewing this, I am not looking to move/change salons but thank you for your interest 🤗

Late, late… but absolutely worth saying

Happy Mother’s Day! ✨

To all my wonderful clients in and around Lexington KY and Central Kentucky who show up every day for their families, their work, and their world — you deserve to be celebrated.

This week, one of my client’s daughters gifted her mom a Restorative Pedicure, and honestly… what a powerful gift.
Not just a “treat,” but real comfort, relief, and a chance to breathe.

My client came in with:
• Thick, uncomfortable toenails
• Long hours on her feet
• Dry skin creating heavy buildup and callusing
• Extra strain that made every step feel harder

And with slow, intentional work, we were able to soften, reduce, refine, and bring her feet back to a place of comfort.
(Polish was an add‑on — Restorative Pedicures focus on the foundation first.)

A gentle reminder:
Any cut, crack, or open area on the feet can become a doorway for irritation and discomfort. Closing those areas and supporting the skin barrier is one of the best ways to keep your feet feeling safe and supported.

To every mom, grandmother, bonus mom, and mother‑figure — you deserve comfort, softness, and a moment that’s just for you.

👣 Happy Mother’s Day from me to you in Lexington and Beyond! — even if it’s a little late. Your feet deserve to feel loved too.

Late cancellations don't just affect me, they affect the clients waiting for openings.

Friendly reminder from your favorite Certified Master Pedicurist 👣

When this chair sits empty because of a last-minute cancellation or no-show, it doesn’t just create a gap in my day. It directly impacts my income, my ability to cover overhead, and ultimately my paycheck.

As a small business owner, I don’t receive paid time off, hourly wages, or compensation when appointments are missed. Every reserved appointment is time specifically held for YOU. That time could have been offered to another client who was hoping to get in for their nails, pedicure, or a much needed self care ritual.

Late cancels and no-shows affect:✨ Salon overhead✨ Product costs✨ Utilities & rent✨ Scheduling availability✨ Lost income✨ Other clients waiting for appointments

At The Ornate Onyx, appointments are not just “spots on a calendar.” They are reserved business hours in a private appointment-based studio.

Because of this, late cancellation and no-show policies are strictly enforced. Clients who cancel with less than 24 hours notice or fail to show for their appointment will be charged according to salon policy + banned until paid in full + new appointment.

I completely understand that emergencies and life happen. I always try to approach situations with kindness and understanding. But respecting appointment times is also respecting my business, my livelihood, and clients who have been eagerly waiting for openings.

Thank you to my amazing clients who consistently show up, communicate, and support small business owners like me. You truly keep the passion for what I do alive. 😳

👠Your feet weren’t born tapered — fashion did that.

As a Certified Master Pedicurist (CMP) here in Lexington, my work is rooted in understanding how real feet move — not how shoes want them to look.
I’m not a podiatrist or pedorthist. My lane is education, observation, and restoring the natural shape your feet were meant to have.

Here’s the truth:

When your toes are squeezed together, they can’t rotate through your step.
They can’t make full contact with the ground.
Your balance system loses one of its anchors.
Your foundation starts working overtime.

And none of this came from anatomy.
It came from fashion history — a silhouette someone once decided “looked better,” even though it contradicts human structure.

At The Ornate Onyx in Lexington, KY, I create a space where your feet are allowed to return to their natural width, natural stability, and natural presence.
Clients travel from across Central, Eastern, and even Western Kentucky because they’re ready for something grounded, intentional, and rooted in truth rather than trends.

Your feet were never meant to fit the shoe.
The shoe was supposed to fit you.

Below are a compilation of different feet I have come across from repetitive and consistent high heel use, tight fitting toe boxes, narrow shoes etc. Sometimes this can lead to hallux issues, dropped metatarsal heads and arch.

✨ Cuticle Oil = Hydration
Hydration = Retention ✨

If you’re in Lexington, Richmond, Berea, or anywhere in Central Kentucky and you struggle with lifting, peeling, or dry cuticles, this is exactly why.

I ran a quick durability test on myself — no prep and no cuticle oil for a few days — to show what dehydration really looks like.

On the surface, the nails look fine.
But when you look closer, you can see the crusty white lines around the cuticles — and those dry, dehydrated edges are exactly where lifting starts.

First photo depicts: Before: dry, white, crusted cuticles
Second and third: After oil: smooth, flexible, protected, no longer visible crusty or white around the cuticle lines
Fourth: After washing with Dawn: still hydrated, because the right oil penetrates instead of sitting on top

🫧Dawn strips oils aggressively.
If it can clean wildlife, it can absolutely strip your natural nail oils — which is why so many people in Lexington KY experience curling, cracking, or product separation.

💧Hydration is the foundation of retention.
Dry cuticles snag, crack, and break the seal.
Hydrated cuticles stay flexible — and flexible nails hold product longer.

If you’re wanting healthier nails, smoother cuticles, and better retention, daily cuticle oil is the simplest place to start.

Your nails will thank you every single day.
